Ladies, I am having my (soon to be patented) CRDSTU springs fitted tomorrow :D and thought that whilst the old girl is up on the hoist I might get the boys to flatten the pinch welds. I have a couple of questions:

Does this do anything structurally to the strength of the weld? Is the car going to fall apart like something from Herbie the Love Bug?? :shock:

Are there only 2 (one each side) or is the same pinch present in the back arches? If so do these ones need doing also?

Has anyone other than Stu had this procedure done?

I was thinking of going for the larger size tyre (265/75?) but am still a little unsure re rubbing - do I need spacers or will it fit OK. I also want to keep the spare tyre on the back door...

Well..... doesn't really affect strength, Stu has gone all out on his by cutting and rewelding, me.... I just used a BFH, then hid them behing some real tuff rubber matting I have.

Yes... only the Two at the rear of the arch on the front, under neath that plastic lining that sticks forward in the arch.

Well...Yes, myself, and I think CDKJ did his as well.

i would cut the plastic, use a BFH and mash the weld down, spray with kill rust and araldite the plastic back up

More questions: Will 245/75 R16 fit without the weld flattened?

Anyone got any experience with 255/70 R16 I notice BFG make an MT in this size....

I spose its one of those things...the more you look the more confusing it becomes :?

I did mine, the link above show's how I did it & the other link show's some picks of how much trimming I needed to do. I also bent part of the chasie rail (should be in the pic's. Good advice given to me on that one :wink:, at full lock I get a rub at that end)I've now removed the wheel spacers & am getting these soon

I'm not happy with the prospect of a problem while running wheel spacers all day every day (that's just me). You do need to change your stock rim for a 265/70/16, not sure about a 265/75/16 (it may sit higher on the ball joint). Mine will rub like hell when off road if I don't change the back space. These Crager rims have 5" back space so it give's me an extra 12mm offset from where the stock KJ rim sit's now. While not going too far out to cause a prob with the flares (I hope). Wooders still needs to reply with a price & I will then order then (Prividing they are cheaper than the Rockcrawlers I can get from Mannell Motors). All in all they should arrive mid to late July (I hope)

If you have a good look around there are more forum posts on tyre size than just about anything else. Sorry for starting yet another one.

I am a little concerned that by flattening the weld I might jeopardise my insurance. I'm also starting to think 265 might be a bit big. I wonder whether 255 with a 70 profile (currently running BFG AT 245/70) will rub anywhere. Set of BFG mudders in that size might do alright......

Chris, If you want you can try fitting my Cooper STT's on your car for a test. They are 245/75R16's on a set of orgininal kj steelies, The 245/75/16's are actually 11mm bigger in diameter than a 255/70/16 and 2mm bigger in diameter that CDKJ's 265/70/16's , so you can get a real idea of what you can fit on and what the bigger tyres are going to contact.

Took my new STT's for their 1st run last weekend, I have 6mm spacers all round and the front is fine however the back needs a bit of work ... Be warned.. at full flex the rear lugs decided to trim the outer portion of the rear wheel arch.. The steel lip bent out the started to slice of the lugs off the tyre.
I think I will remove the rear spacers so the tyre sit further inside the wheel arch and throw in a lower bump stop to supplement the top one.
A few minutes with a rubber hammer has the trim back in but I know the sidebiters on the tyre arn't coming back. (Looks like a life on the back door for this puppy!)

I have 255/70/16 Cooper ATR. I have fitted a set of rear bumpstops for 2 reasons. 1 to stop the over compressing of my OME N132L shocks & 2 so I can open my rear doors at full compression. At the front I get slight rubbing on the sway bar at full lock otherwise all clear, they miss the pinch weld & I have done no trimming at all front or rear. I have also fitted a 10mm TJ rear coil spacer & a 8mm (I think its 8mm) strut top plate up front.

You really need to do your research with the tyres. For instance a 245/75/16 in one brand has a different overall diameter to another 245/75/16 in another brand. For example
Cooper ATR LT245/75R16 is 775mm (31in.)dia.
Maxis MT-754 Buckshot Mudder LT245/75R16 is 765mm (30.6in.)

Well I cant find too many more to support my claim but you get the idea. Not too many manufactures show the tyre specs, Goodyear dont, Dunlop dont, Bridgestone do but dont make a tyre in 245/75/16 period, according to their website, but they do show specs. BFG show specs but I cant work out the overall diameter, a bit confusing.

i tried something a little different with my pinchweld


i used a Propane torch to heat the weld i then folded it while it was pliable


then i used a block of wood to flatten it out

Broke out the Oxy and you can guess the rest :lol: :lol:

Your cosmetic touches to the wheel arch look the goods - Its the sort of thing that happens whenever I go DIY except I'd have been left with a smouldering pile of jeep parts....Love the Rene sticker, where did you get it?

2.2m that's bordering on being a pain in the bum for car parks etc...If you changed your cross bars to the Rola "aero" or Rhino sports (I think those are the model names) you might pick up an inch or two. I have the aero bars they are almost flat and have a really low profile - the vortex basket mounts exactly the same as it does in your pic but finding a shovel bracket hasn't been easy.

Of course, you may not give a rats about the height... :wink:
