Kings Custom Super coils - Rear replacement of OME948"s

Yes folks, I have replaced my sagging rear OME948 coils in the rear with a set of custom made King springs. Basically I always carry a bit in the boot area, and with packing up for trips and wotnot, the rear coils just haven't stood up to it, even in the beginning to get a decent lift to try and level the KJ I had to put in 2 TJ 10mm packers, and then soon after a 3rd 10mm packer was added to keep the rear up at about 545mm from hub centre to flare. That was 30mm of packers and the OME948 Heavy duty coils, not really impressed by this and the fact that it was very sloppy and when I packed the car for a trip the car sat another 35-40mmm lower again.

So Stu installed the new coils Saturtday morning, I made sure we had a decent weight in the back, I normally have a drw system in the boot that itself weighs about 18kgs, plus a fridge, 2 steel jerry cans full (thats another 50kgs) some random stuff weighing about another 30kgs, as well, I have a tow hitch with fuel tank skid, and on the roof a steel basket (17kgs) So, packed up to and extent (not as much as when camping mind you), but enough to cause the nomal problem of the rear dropping down to 530mm from hub centre to flare. We took out the old coils, removed the 3 packers from each side and installed the New Supercoils, IMMEDIATE RESULT. with the load in place the KJ sat back up at 555mm and the front close behind at 550. Good ride with the load in, then when I got home I removed most of the weight, normally when I would do that the car would jump back up the inch or so it normally would, but with the supercoils, it raised only about 8-10mm, which was also a good thing, as the worry was that the ride height was great for "loaded" but was it going to be too high for "unloaded". The answer is no, very acceptalble ride height even unloaded, but, yes, stiff ride, but these coils are purpose built to "hold up" and that they do.

Will be installing a set of Super travel shockies sometime this week that will give awesome flex in the rear, and will post up some pics as soon as I have tested it on some tracks next weekend. But at this stage I believe the problem of the ever sagging rearend it's self, is at an end.

Sounds good cmohr, I was emailing STU and he told me how happy he was with the install. I was wondering how it would go un-loaded & you have answered that. Do you think you would get coil binding when fully stuffed in the rear or are your bump stops long enough to prevent that?

Pain in the booty thing with the 948's is the sag, if you never had to carry anything around you'd be fine. Mine is 550 rear without a load (948's & 2 packers). Not really the best setup I know, sounds like it will only get worse (like yours did). With the draws in it's down to 545mm or so (and then you need to add all the gear :roll:

), front is 545mm all the time.

I need to sort out a few things before I can spend any money on the suspension, but I'm very interested in how it goes & pans out. Better to know what your going to do than have no idea at all.

You should post some pic's.

I'll post up Pics and all about the Super Travel shockies later in the week, but they are about 610mm fully extended, you probably wouldn't want to use them without the Supercoils, otherwise normall coils would start to fall out. :shock:

Are you starting to get into the realm of longer control arms, extenson links and the like. Such as the 4" JBA lift is talking about. That's a lot of travel on stock parts (other than springs and shocks).

I don't think I need that extreme LOL
but the super duper rear springs would be nice sometime in the future when I pull my finger out and build a drawer system :lol:

Front R/L 550/550

Rear R/L 570/570

Measured from Hub centre to flare. Unloaded KJ.

And the 31/10.5/15's love it!!!!!

Oh and I still have the fridge and draw system in the back with all my recovery gear, and remember I am hanging a full size 31/10.5/15 Mickey T MTZ off the back as well. This is not a lift for the general man in the street as he would not like the ride/feel of it, this is to travel and have a load, whilst retaining full rear flex, something the polyair system does not do.

I love it cmohr, I just took my draws out (carrying them around for the last few weeks). I will have to get a set of these rear Super Coils but just not sure when. I'd even buy them over a new CB :lol:

Yes, handles very very, I used to get a rear roll to the opposite cnr of the car when cornering, now that is almost gone, When I say "not for general" I mean it is Stiff, don't expect the same ride as the 948's, but it is excellent on my car, for me. I just want to make sure anyone who wants to install these is doing it for the correct reasons not just for a big lift, it is so as to maintain lift whilst carrying a load. After KJASH's failure to fully appreciate what went into putting the 15's on my KJ, he just thought, I've got a KJ to, It will work for me, anbd that as we saw was not the case, then he jumped up and sold the things before he had even set the car up correctly, saying they dont fit a KJ, I have wheeled mine very hard with the 15's and they work great, so to these coils on my car, but others will have to see for themselves. The perfect candidate KJ for these coils is one that basically always has a degree of "load" in the rear, one that gets 4x4ing and expects to still retain good flex in the rear, and one that has already had to resort to fitting 2 or 3 packers to get the KJ back up to the original lift heigh, and a lift height that still allows the car to 4x4, and drive around the city with no real ill effect other than a stiffer ride.

CPC, I'm positive this coil set is perfect for your needs, as it was for mine.

I'm just being cautious about saying these are springs that "all" should replace their 948's with, only some people should.

Ed as you may or may not know, Kings make OME, the heavy duty King spring is basically the OME948, and a lot of folks have no issue with the OME, CRDSTU himself still has his original OME948's in the rear of his, and it has plenty of lift with no sign of sag. But as I and CDKJ have found the issue comes from compression and overcompression, when theres a load in the rear and you drive on those corrugated outback roads for 100's or in my case 1000's of km's they just don't hold up. We live and learn and with any luck this will solve my hassles.

You may also see in the pics CD posted up of the rear coils, the nice big bumpstops I now have at the base of the coils. They are about 35-40mm high and are made from a high desity rubber hammer, they will also help as I will now not get the overcompression I did before, and the limiting of flex I get from the extra bumpstops will be more than compesated for by the longer coils and soon longer shockies. All this together with the 31/10.5/15's and taking off the front swaybar, this should be an even more capible 4x4 than it was before.

cmohr, Thanks for your reply. I have spoken to CRD Stu and placed an order for a set of springs. We have had the same problem you have had because we leave all the gear in the rear all the time. You never know when you will want to go off road. I am looking forward to the new springs.
