Arrived Birdsville Sunday Dusk. Did big Red & Little Red. Decided that the trek across the Simpson pulling trailers east west too much of a risk for break downs. Now heading to Alice Via the Plenty hwy, Gem Tree fossicking Chambers Pillars & Rainbow Valley back to Alice. Photos when we can upload somewhere. On the Road again... I can wait to............ 8)

Hmm, sensible it is. Does this indicate the whole group has taken this path or have some chosen to cross? Looking forward to the photos.

We have all headed round via the Plenty - camped tonight by the side of the Diamantina just outside Boulia.

We will set up to do the crossing (next June/July?) with just tents. Trailers really are a no-no.

Left Birdsville on Wednesday and drove to Boulia where we camped by the side of the Burke River - spent the evening sitting round a campfire on the river bank. Jen caught a yabbie in her yabbie net. The Min-Min store at Boulia has to be seen to be believed - there may be something it doesn't sell but you'd have to search hard to find it.

Next day we headed out along the Donohue towards Alice. A day of trials and tribulations - before we set out Mud found out that his CV boot clips had come loose and he'd lost most of the CV grease. Also the rest of us had had our Anderson plugs destroyed - and the MIn-Min store had just sold their last 50A one! Then along the road I got a puncture in a trailer tyre (fortunately repairable) and Joe got a sidewall tear in one tyre on the Prado.

Due to the tyre delays we didn't get as far as we expected and camped for the night (Thursday) beside the Arthur River along the Plenty Highway. The Donohue in QLD is well maintained by Boulia Shire who are even sealing parts of it - in contrast the Plenty is very badly maintained with corrugations in places that slow you down to 40-50 kph.

Then today on to Alice, stopping for fuel at Jervois Station (unleaded at $1.95!). First stop in Alice was an auto electrician who fixed all the broken trailer connections, then on to the caravan park (hot showers, yummee!) where I am sending this missive to you all.

Photos later when I've downloaded from the camera.

Gee those CV clips should be covered by warranty, that's a brand new vehicle and those things are usually welded on at the factory. Guess it doesn't help much (being covered by warranty) out there. What was the temporary fix? I doubt anyone would be carrying CV grease?

ARB destroyed the originals when fitting the lift and they replaced them no problem but the person fitting them never did the clips up tight enough and the left side one came off which alowed grit to enter the CV which I am getting cleaned out this morning and repacked. There is a 4 to 6 day wait in Alice Springs to get new ones. Will be talking to ARB when I get home.
WE are enjoying the stay in Alice while we are here anyhow.

Ross, glad to hear your enjoying the trip despite your 'issues' with ARB's workmanship (or lack there of). I'd hope they will replace that CV when you get back as well seeing as it has had some sand in it. Enjoy the rest and relaxation, and hopefully no further dramas.

Monday down to Rainbow Valley and then overnight at Chambers Pillar. Tuesday back up the old Ghan track to Alice and the out to Palm Valley. Wednesday down to Hermley (?) meteorite site (Nearly blew the tents apart that night, the wind was so strong), and Thursday out to KIngs Canyon.
