Code 0508 & ***now 0123**

Hi All,
Got this code today, the KJ didn't start 1st go. 2nd go it fluttered for a while then stopped. 3rd go I hit the gas a little and got it going. I'm thinking I may need to clean the carbie, reason being is it sounded like it was struggling to get air into the engine.

Anyone know what the code means....

I should also clean the pos and neg terminal's on the battery, they have a bit of the white stuff on them.

go and clean those terminal's mate not the problem but need's doing,
not sure of the code but now of the problem. If the car doesn't quite start
on the first hit of the key the computer has told the injectors to fire in fuel
to give it hand to start but if it doesn't it leaves excess fuel in the cylinder's
hence why when you open the throttle it start's just like old days of a flooded carby
You can buy throttle body cleaner from an auto parts place to give a clean
and also could have leaky injector's how many kay's is on your car?

I've got a spray can of the throttle cleaner as I had to use it a few months back, I will give it another hit tonight and clean the terminals.

I've about 48500 ks on the clock :wink:

It's the "Idle Control Circuit Low" code. Not sure where that comes from on the petrol model.

that could do it to. It is excess fuel problem but this can contribute to it,
you don't have enough kay's up to really warrant an injector clean but maybe
run some cleaner through with the fuel. The idle air control is mixed in with the
trottle body somewhere just have a look around for any dust/dirt around it too.
had a similar problem with the TJ a couple of weeks ago.

normally a low output signal to the computer, it won't stop the engine from running but
can upset the amount fuel the injector's put in. Low output can be as little as .02 volts

So is that battery related?

More likely it is sensor related - ultimately the condition that causes the sensor to go low. If you had a battery problem it would be showing up in other places as well (like a 560 series code - System voltage, etc).

definately not battery related(still go and clean those terminals though)
a low battery will cause the computer to completely shut down. The tolerance is very
low as that is how they reduce spiking. Sensor's run off low voltage maybe 3
to 4 volts and work off differing resistance's. That is where an ohm meter
come's in handy. By the sensor varing the resistance it can tell the computer
by varing voltage what is needed when and all done in millisecond's.

Get the sensor and wiring checked. You will note that the error message says "short to ground": that could be a damaged wire or a broken sensor.

OK, so now that I'm not under warranty and not bound to Jeep do other places have the gear to check this sort of sensor?

My old 2 cents. If your not an auto electrician and don't have the tools then your going to have to pay. I'd be tempted to have a Jeep service guy stick his diagnostic connectors on and see what he finds. You can decide who fixes it when you know what has to be fixed.

getting it scanned is a good idea to find the exact cause.
first though check all the wires around the throttle body and
look for sign's of rubbing and exposure. Oh and I would try
resetting the computer if anyone know's how (something to do with
disconnecting the battery) as it can also have reset itself as they can be fickle
things sensor's

to clear the code without a scan tool

disconnect the battery

turn all light switches on

bump brakes

this will discharge the capacitors storing any charge

wait 10 mins

reconnect battery

reset clock

turn on

away you go

the standard battery should not need a pin, at least mine didnt
