Hi Gang,
A girl here at work is looking at a 2005 4cyl diesel tubby KJ.
Last time she took it for a test drive the turbo shat itself when the hose running to it went kaput.
Apparently the turbo then fragmented with small pieces of metal inside.
The dealer (non jeep), has since replaced the tubby, and are offering to pay for an RACQ inspection, and giving her an extended warranty.
All this for 21K.
Not being a diesel guy, just wanted to see if anyone has experienced any similar issues, and any advice about these motors.
Cheers,
M.

I'm no Turbo or Diesil guru, but, if it had a catistrophic failure of that nature, what went in the engine?????

Personally I would touch it with a barge pole. As well 21 seems like an aweful lot for an 05.

Cheers mate, I was thinking the same.
But is 21K really a lot for an 05?

It would be very unusual for anything from the turbo grenading itself to get through the intercooler, the intake body and into the cylinders. How many Km's on this engine?

Hose splitting is a known problem if the owner has not installed a Provent or other oil capture system (you see Chrysler in their wisdom decided to use non-fuel rated turbo hoses and then pipe the CCV blowoff gases back into the turbo intake side for recycling and to meet emission requirements - thanks alot Chrysler!). This indicates to me that the precious owner did not know enough about this engine to look after it properly.

If the service has been done properly (by the Jeep Service Manual) then it might be ok but I would want a few things checked:

1. What is the boost pressure at 1800rpm? This will tell you if you still have any sort of leak, and thus CEL codes popping up. Really need a boost guage to do this and usually this is a turbo diesel specialist job.
2. Scan it and see if there are any other codes to worry about.
3. Get a knowledgable diesel KJ owner to drive it and look it over - Pipeliner is the obvious choice. I'd do it if I was there.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to recover the cost of the repairs through the sales price. Get the prospect to do a search and compare on Carsales and other boards, then bargain down and GET A WARRANTY!!!!

Hi Glen,
I thought it was the hose issue too, but she said they had replaced the whole turbo at a cost of $3000.
And the price was actually $25K, $22 with trade in!!!!
I've talked her out of that deal now.
Thanks boys.
M.

Cmohr put up a 2.4 petrol which is a totally different vehicle. Try the Red Book which states $18k to $20.5k for a 2005 diesel, private sale (no warranty). You would expect a dealer to be more expensive, but $25k seems excessive.

Blown turbo's on deisel's aren't that uncommon either, it would be strange for a compressor wheel to
let go, that would be the only time to worry about anything, bearing's I think are like crankshaft one's
and rely on oil pressure to keep them working but are sperate to intake housing. How would you see
fragments on the intake side? out of curiousity, was it because of the blown hose?. For a low klm's deisel that price would be about the mark,
but you would want a pretty clean machine.

It would have to have some pretty low miles for that price...
