Thats what they say the error codes for the transmission say at the moment. They have no idea what that actually means and want the KJ for "A few days" to see if they can find anything.

Just cost 1600.00 for the last lot of stuff.. :shock:

They say it could be one or more of 10 possible things, ranging from a broken wire to internal damage and the TCM.

Gutted.

Not sure, but, it feels no different to always, so I'm thinking "FROM NEW!!!!!!!!!". I remember having a loan KJ from them a few years ago when I had a service done, and remember thinking this is so different and so much better tahn mine, I asked them about it and they shrugged their shoulders and said each is different.. BS I say.

I just feel so disapointed... I LOVE this car, but, If I cannnot trust it and cannot get reliable servicing..

I really dont what to sell it. But reality is..

Currently....

Lift = illegal (too high)
Tyres = illegal (too big)
Wheels = illegal (under orginal size, too much offset - track wider than legal)
Suspension = at limit (I do actually now have it all worked out - No clunks, No contact with body, perfect working, BUT At its limit)
Gearing = Had to put in 4.10's to have it drivable

Option

Twin cab Hilux.

Standard = higher and more clearance than the KJ (Con - leaf spring rear end)
Standard = 15's on 31's (I can put my current tyres straight on - and they are legal)
Turbo Diesel 3.0l with 5 speed manual - Beautiful engine and gearbox - go forever.
Space out the wa-zoo..

TJ

Get a manual - thats one of my problems solved, but its petrol, so !!!
I can put my wheels and tyres straight on (not sure if 31's are actually legal on a TJ.
Con - it a Jeep, so Servicing????????

JK
Not an option
CRD would be Nice, but too many issues with them, and again Jeep/servicing???

CON

No Money.

A difficult decision, my friend. The Belafonte is an inspiration to all of us and we would hate to see it leave, but I can understand your frustration.

Just bear in mind that whilst it was our love of Jeeps (and especially KJ's) that brought us together, it is our regard for each other as friends that keeps us together - and that friendship will persist even if you move over to the Dark Side.

My 4wding started in Hiluxes back in the mid-80's, and they were tough dependable vehicles - totally gutless, but dependable. No idea what the current ones are like, except to think that they ruined the macho look when they lowered the body panels to hide the chassis!

Never heard of that tranny code before. You have my sympathy.

Re your choices, they all sound expensive from where you are. The cheapest option might be to

Lift = go down to 2" then legal and it probably resolves any future suspension issues.
Tyres = go to legal
Wheels = go to legal

You could fund this slight 'de-mod' by selling off your excess equipment. You'll still have a very capable KJ (much the same as many us of are driving around in every day).

Re the Hilux I would be too excited about that engine, every new EGR diesel these days has to run particulate filters and you'll have the same issues with soot and oil build up in the intake passages. There is a great body of knowledge built up on the VM diesels (be they XJs, KJs, or JKs). The 2.8 VM diesels are also more efficient than the Hilux ones with 200cc less displacement (more torque too from what I have heard).

I can understand you wanting to 'put it out of its misery'. I had a vehicle once that was nothing but trouble and its such a relief when it was gone (except for my still kicking myself for not knowing when to stop pouring money into a useless cause).

Maybe it is time to cut it loose. :(

Improper installation of the shift kit caused your problems.

Yeah I feared that, but, unfortunatey I dont think thet Jeep are going to blame their own workmanship and fix the problem, and i can actually prove that they did it, but as I say, I cant actually know what this means as the torque converter still locks up , it still changes gear, it still works, no differently to before, so I'm at a loss.

Can I put a RFE transmission in to replace the RLE..

I'd love to import a bell housing ad manual box and ecu and convert the bugger over to manual, but fear that too would be illegal here.

Glend, one reason I have the amount of lift and the tyres is so as I can actually do what driving I want to do, that why I did the mods in the first place, to go back and not to be able to do the driving I want to do would be as dissapointing as these issues.

And there lies the root of your problems! You want a vehicle that is both a daily drive AND an extreme off-roader. Most of us, when faced with the Widow Maker, say "Looks like fun, but I've got to drive this car to work next week". You have said "That was fun, what mods can I make to ensure I get further up there next time!".

Why not turn the Belafonte into a legal Jeep for the tag-along trips, and buy a Suzuki, TJ or Hilux or whatever that you can modify for extreme work and tow behind the Belafonte to the area you want to conquer?

You'll probably shoot me for saying this, but have you considered selling the Mini?

You know, I dont know how crazy this sounds, but, its exactly the same as The Belafonte, except off course the engine and gearbox..

I fly to WA, drive it back, then its the same colour/year, switch over all my stuff, bullbar, skids, lift ect ect, and the paint is the same, so, switch the front right fender complete with snorkel, just have to cut one hole and thats it.

If its a CRD does that mean it definately has the RFE box????
