After all the thousands of Ks in the bush I had a rock hit my windscreen on Silverwater Road Sydney yesterday. Not worried at the time as it was just a little ding below the wiper arm on the drivers side (in the little black strip area). By the time I looked again last night it had developed into a five armed star with each little arm about 10mm long. Today I got in the KJ and the thing had grown! One arm is now 100mm long and curved (See photo below). Having not had to change a windsrceen in many years (lots of dings on my old Forester but it never spread on me like this). So what do I do? Will it stop or continue to grow? Can it be 'repaired' by one of those O'Brien guys, or do I need to replace it (ouch what does that cost?).

either drive with it like that, or replace it :x some places in the states claim they can fix a crack the size of a US dollar, but it never looks right

You could have O'Brien's stop it from going any further, but I do believe that constitutes a new screen. :( Check your insurance policy for replacement screen/s

TJM sell a product called UFIXIT Windscreen DO-IT-Yourself repair kit. Bloody brilliant. I had a crack about the same size as yours, (maybe I didn't word that correctly) and you now need to really look for it to see it.Most people looking at your screen would not pick it up.
Cheers Greg

Once the cracks that long it's hard to stop, you need to drill a spot at the very tip to dissipate the stress.

I'd replace it.

and check prices -
Austin has a shop (1 man shop) that will get a OEM windshield and come to your house or job and replace it on site
and he was cheaper than the big shops - he gets the 'jobber' discount because he does a lot of them
but his overhead is a truck and a phone.

It was ~ $120 US in 2007 for a new factory windshield installed.

Replace it - it's too far gone to be left. I'll have to check the cost but I think I remember paying around $400 for one last Christmas. Don't you have glass cover (no excess) on your insurance?
