A few of us over on AJOR are considering a group buy of all the parts needed to replace the timing belt on the CRD engine. The handbook says it should be replaced every 100,000 km, but one unlucky owner had his go at 96,000 resulting in considerable expense.

The dealer quote to replace the belt is $1700 which includes over $1000 for the parts. The VM specialist in the UK can supply the parts for under $400 plus shipping.

Anyone interested should go to this AJOR post.. If you can't post in AJOR then post here if you are interested.

I just checked my manual and the CRD replacement interval for the timing belt is 160,000km (100,000 mi)
2005 Liberty Limited.

Down here the timing belt replacement interval is (100,000kms or 60 months (5 years)). This is similiar to other vehicles sold and serviced in this market. I guess the reasoning is that it is what you would call Very Hot here for most of the year. Recent timing belt breakages around, and before the 100,000km mark, seem to bear out the wisdom of that replacement interval. Having lived in Ontario and Alberta for many years I could suggest that the cold might do just as much damage to a rubber belt (I doubt a block heater would do much to keep a timing belt warm).

160000km!! Madness. I would do mine (if I had one) at 80000 tops.
