I am leaving Sydney on the 24th of February and heading up to Dysart to visit my son (well actually I think he wants to see the dog more than his father). Thinking about the route, I am tempted to take the inland route (Newell Highway to the Leichhardt Highway to the Capricorn Highway to Fitzroy Development Road) because I hate dealing with Brisbane freeway system and the Pacific and Bruce Highways. Last time through there I was caught in a long tailback on the approach to the Gateway Bridge where a truck was on fire at 3:30pm and almost lost my Beerburum caravan park spot (and had one very cranky dog in the back).

Does anyone know if the Leichhardt Highway is ok all the way up from the border (given the floods). There are some river crossings along there and of course Theodore. I wanted to avoid the New England and Burnett Highways as well as they go through some of the very hard hit areas. The RACQ website seems to say the route is Ok but don't get on the minor secondary roads.

Finally, any recommendations on pet friendly Caravan Parks, in Goondiwindi, Miles, Theodore? I don't know where exactly I would stop as it depends on weather, progress, the dog's mood, etc.

Cheers :JEEPIN:

Hi Glen,
Theodore is all open again (Suz's uncle and aunty live there) I can't vouch for the condition of the roads as there will
be road works any way you go. I know the Bruce highway around this neck of the woods is still a tragic mess. But the Leichhardt
has never been great so it is should be alright. :)
