After setting out at around 8am I finally made it home at about 9:30pm Monday. Thanks to everyone that attended for a great weekend, and I promise to put up some photos in the next few days. Thanks also to each one that stopped to offer help (and moral support) when my camper trailer spring shattered just short of the blacktop. The poor thing just could not handle the rigors of the West Kunderang access track and the numerous potholes. Finally one big one just collapsed the left side spring, broke all of the leaves bar one and sent a piece back under gi-frog's KJ where it put a big dent in his bash plate. I have kept it so you'll see it soon.

Sorry Pipes I gave you my mobile number to ring and then realised I could not turn it on because I forgot the pin. A day of real trials: with the camper sitting on the axle and broken spring I had to jury rig a replacement - using fencing wire provided by Pipes, and a rubber mallet provided by gi-frog we managed to get the camper trailer frame to sit on the rubber mallet and wired it to the spring perch. With a couple of tiedown straps to prevent fore and aft movement of the axle I managed to limp it into Armidale (44kms) and it was doing up to 80kph on that trip. Once in Armidale we tracked down the Supercheap Auto shop and bought a new (lighter rated) spring and I replaced it on the side of the main road there with gi-frog handling tools and the radio (providing updates to the Lost people heading back through Armidale to Qld and NSW). Frog's rubber mallet was just about totaly destroyed - split open from getting pounded by the axle - it would have never made it to Tamworth. It was finally about 2pm when we left Armidale. Phil and Sandra joined us just as we were finishing up and we drove together to Tamworth where they decided to stop for the night. Frog and I pressed on, keeping each other awake and entertained. Whew, what a day. And did I mention that we left camp without a key to the gate -doh!

Glen, I wondered why we couldn't get through to you! Apparently the Ford dealership in Armidale also does trailers and trailer repairs, according to the guy at the Mitsubishi service desk, and we sent you an SMS. Glad the wire helped.

I echo Frog's sentiments - a great campsite. Pity it takes a day to get there and a day to get home.

A great week-end. Shame about the lack of tracks due to the high river crossing. However I do hope everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to our next LOST adventure.
Cheers

The Queensland contingent met up at Chindera on Friday morning and convoyed down the Pacific Highway to Grafton, then turned inland on the Armidale road. As we approached the turn-off for Kunderang (the Armidale-Kempsey road, we heard chatter on the UHF and there were the NSW contingent - a miracle of timing! We all headed off down the road and onto the final 40km of dirt leading to the campsite. Getting our priorities right, the first action after setting up the trailers, tents, caravan, etc was to get the camp fire going - and with mountains of free firewood it didn't go out until Monday morning! Spent the rest of Friday sitting round the fire and getting reacquainted with old friends.

Saturday we woke up to the sound of rain on canvas, which persisted for the rest of the day on and off. Unfortunately most of the decent tracks on the property were on the other side of the river and the river was too high and running too fast for the crossings to be passable, so we did a bit of exploring on our side in between periods of sheer laziness under the huge communal tarp (thanks J.a.G!) which we had erected near the fire by dint of using every spare tent pole on the site.

Sunday woke us up with bright sunshine and stayed fine all day. The Pipes and Muds went for a trip into Armidale where we enjoyed the market whilst Glend, Frog went fishing (unsuccessfully!) and the others went for a drive to the Halls Peak camp ground - only to discover that as it was in a NSW National Park there was a locked gate halfway down the track. So we all ended up back at the camp where we did full justice to (another) bottle of port and some Bundy rum.

Monday again was a clear sunny morning as we all packed up to move out. Glend and Frog were the first to leave, and their trials have been well recorded. Pipes and Mud went next (Mud wanted someone in front in case he had any trouble with his new caravan up the first steep bit, but in the event he did it easily), followed later by the others. We found Glend and Frog parked up just before the main road fixing the broken spring, and luckily I had a roll of good binding wire in the toolbag. Then off back to Brisbane (via Armidale and the New England Highway this time - much less traffic than the Pacific), arriving home around 6pm.

A good weekend in spite of the weather, and we all vowed to do it again next year.
