Well the story of my KJ life seems some what reoccuring, Friday night it started stalling at idle but would run under acceleration except for
a couple of stutters every now and then. Got us home though with the check engine light glowing away on the dash. Next morning
found it had thrown a P1391 code, intermittent loss of CMP and CKP. darn it. :banghead: :banghead: :5SHOTS:
Time to pull the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, normally not to hard although hard to find. Pulled the airbox out and easily
removed the camshaft sensor. Time for the crankshaft sensor, these things are located at the bottom right hand side of the block
in behind the exhaust. Now removing the retaining bolt was easy and removing the sensor should have been also,
except that I heard a crack when I tried to twist it loose (I used a bit of tension but not alot) and only half a sensor came out.
Much to my amazement the other part was seized solid in the worst imaginable position in the engine, no spare room there at all. 6 hours later,
300 Dollars (replacement sensors) alot of swearing, depression and mental anguish (for 2 days all I could see was dollar signs flashing before my eyes)
I have the offending item out.
Now the moral of this story is - When you own a Jeep keep your Credit Card close, but keep an arrangement of grinders even closer!!!!
and I still don't know if this will fix the problem.

All is good now, the stress wiped away after it finally came out. New sensors are on order with the local Jeep Spares people.
I will have them in the next couple of days. Thanks for the offer Greg. As bad as the grinder sounds it is what saved me in the end.
I have an aircompressor and a die grinder with a few burrs. I small tree type burr and slowly ground the sensor out.
I also cleaned the hole up a touch too. This is something to for all 3.7 V6 owners to keep an eye on as I doubt I will be the last
for this to happen to. It really is a poor design that allows it to be heat affected, open to road grime and rust.
Should be KJing again by the end of the week, just that this year has given my credit card a flogging on the minor stuff that you never
think of. Just for a comparison, for what I have spent on fixing minor issue that need keep it running, I could have regeared it
and had a locker thrown in. Just the joys of maintaining a Jeep.

Hi Jason,
What was the cost of the senors for 3.7, the reason I ask because the 2.8 senors cost me $900 + labour total cost $1500. The crankshaft senor for the 2.8 has to go in on acute angel so it was easier for stealership to install.

Nice one.
James the crank angle sensor was $160.90, the cam angle sensor was $136.80 from my local stealership,
sounds like the 2.8 may be as much of a PITA as my 3.7.
The crank sensor is at the bottom of the block at the rear and is conveniently behind the cat convertor.
It goes in at 90 deg to the block but takes a 90 deg turn as it comes out of the block. It is possibly too small
a hole to start with (won't know until I get my new one) and is prone to heat cycling and the elements. To top
it off it is made of a peice of plastic (conductance reasons).Should be easy but definately isn't. It took alot of
careful work with a diegrinder to get it out and also patience. I ground it out small amount at a time and cleaned
out the swarf each time so as to ensure none went in the engine.
Still an oil change is on the cards soon. If any one else ever has this problem I am happy to help, just keep mind it
could have gone the other way and I could be still pulling the sump out.

Well I've just got back from HB and the trip back (apart from road works everywhere) was regular stopping to clip the glass gate back into it's right position(I'm affraid too many corrigated road trips) to stop the annoying chime and the interior lights being on while driving. In addition to that after re-starting the engine the airbag warning light comes on.Obviously sensor issue as well.$^%$#%*

I have just replaced the air temp,throttle position and the MAP sensors on my 3.7, was getting a code up for the MAP and tried pulling the throttle sensor just to check it and wouldn't you know it, it came apart and left half in there, easy enough to get out though. Lesson learned, if it aint broke .........
Got all three from RockAuto for a tad over a hundred bucks. The MAP sensor is tedious to get at behind the air con compressor and alternator.
Both the MAP and throttle position sensors were quite brittle and broke up very easy, the air temp one seemed ok but changed it anyway.

Well it's all fixed now, but the battery also died. The idle seems soomther now and the engine feels quite happy just wish it would reduce my fuel usage (living in a dream on that one I think)
I will have to do an oil and filter change in the the next week or so, the total tally for this repair to be set at $500. As they say, A happy KJ a happy owner. Until next time.

I know how you feel, after fixing the window reg i now have a cracked radiator and the mike lead from the UHF has just fallen out :grim:

Stating the obvious: Replacing things now and then is just par for the course as the vehicle ages, and it doesn't really matter what brand it is, they all need attention over time. It doesn't help that the 'modern' materials like the plastic and aluminium used in the radiator, break down over time or corrode.

HMMMM indeed. I quickly found a source for a rebuild 4.7L Hemi at a very reasonable cost of $1995 USD. Maybe Stu can stick that in his container for you!

A 545RFE tranny can handle that torque. CRDJON is running a Hemi torque converter in his KJ CRD with 545RFE and reports no problems at all. He sent me the part number for it which I have somewhere.
