I am looking at a getting a CB radio, seeing as i have never owned one is there anything i need to look it when looking around to get one. Also what do you guys use? Are the hand held ones ok ? or do you need the unit and arial etc etc I only will be using it a few times a year and i will always be travelling in a group so mega long range isnt really a priority.

Let me know what you think. and where you would start to look to buy one on the gold coast?

You would be surprised how well a 2Watt handheld will do in close convoy situations. However, if your going to the outback in a convoy of say ten vehicles - where vehicles can often be spread out over 5kms or more just to stay out of the dust; then you need a 5Watt unit and preferably with an external antenna connection. The whole issue of external antenna choice (and placement) is also a big topic.

I have found that there are times when you need both a hand held and a hard wired in car UHF. This is for the times when you need external guidance & communication from your navigator out on the track while you are crawling between washouts, ruts etc.

As others have said stick with known brands who also have online shops.

Good luck and hope to catch up on the tracks somewhere soon..................
