Who is seeing wind farms constructed in their area? In upstate NY, and even southern Ontario, there has been a huge increase in wind farm development. |

We've got lots of them in West Texas - from Abilene to El Paso - they chop up the migrating birds to feed the Coyotes (FYI I think Uffe is an Engineer in Denmark that works with them) |

I know in southern Minnesota you can't get away from the wind farms... they're everywhere... which is kinda cool i have to find those pictures... |

Even a local ski mountain, Jiminy Peak in Hancock, MA installed a wind turbine to power lifts, snowmaking and other power needs.

I not up on the latest technology on wind turbines, but if they are anything like they used to be, which I'm sure now they are not, they are not cost effective to build without the finiancial aid of tax write-offs. Back in the 80's, I used to work for a company that made 2 different sizes of wind turbines and sent them out to Altamont Pass in CA. We had over a year worth of backlog on these things when the Federal Govt. started making noise about doing away with the federal write-off. Within one week, all the investors of these things cancelled all the orders, even though CA. still had their state write-off in effect. That was the end of that business for us. Don't know how many states that have wind turbines in them now have finiancial aid in the form of write-offs or whatever in place to make them worth doing, but they used to be a pretty high maintainence for the amount of energy they produced...at that time 50 to 150kw. Does anyone know the rating on these things now? I can't remember who had what, but I believe back then the state write off was 3 years, and the fed was 5 years, although that may be in reverse. |

Major wind turbine OEM's produce them in the 1.5MW to 3.0MW range. 1.5 to 2.5 are the most common for land based applications. The PTC (production tax credit) will probably expire, but the RPS (renewable porfolio standard) will probably increase per state and nationwide. That means states will have to get a certain percentage of their energy from renewable sources. Besides hydro, wind is the best choice right now. Wind turbines are great dispatchable power sources (i.e., intermittent), but they are not baseload generation sources (i.e., always on 24/7). However, they do reduce the amount of baseload generation fuel required. For example, the wind turbines can reduce the amount of coal or natural gas needed for power generation. Wind turbines are definitely one piece in the energy solution puzzle. |
