Quote:
To help kick-start the industry, the government offered a taxpayer subsidy for up to $1 a gallon for biodiesel production.

But the majority of the biodiesel will never make it to the tanks of local residents. It's shipped to the diesel-starved markets in Europe and other foreign countries. U.S. tax dollars are helping customers there more than here.

Plaza issued this statement today: "Europe is currently the major consumer market willing to pay for our product at positive profit margins. Smart decisions like this today will allow us to succeed here at home, as well as continue to realize the benefits - and the jobs - associated with this vibrant new industry."

Notice the spin here: They admit that its not worth the money to sell BD to the US market, and instead are trying to pitch BD refineries as job creators. No energy independance, no environmental benefit, its all about job creation.

Many people here state that the subsidies are worth it to get people used to the idea of having biofuels around so it is more acceptable. However that goal is clearly not being met if the fuel is mostly being sent overseas, and furthermore our tax dollars are more or less being sent out of the country due to the government subsidy.

To my mind, the subsidy should only apply to fuel sold to the domestic market. Thoughts?
