I was curious if anyone with a diesel has tried to run used hydraulic oil? I have a source of lots of clean used oil.

Only in a waste oil burning furnace or a used multi fuel used military vehicle. I wouldn't use it in my CRD!

Just pumped 10 gallons in today. Filtered it down to 3 micron. Starts fine runs fine...

Smokes when running the oil 50/50. Mileage is down about 3 mpg. Cuts fuel bill roughly in half though so can't complain...

make sure you blend it in a jug with a double dose of Howes or Power Service prior to putting it in the tank. My liberty LOVES 50/50 in the summer! Doesn't smoke and I have had absolutely no loss of power or fuel economy.

Used hydraulic oil contains water and other impurities, use a hydraulic oil filtration machine to clean it.

I use a centrifuge to clean the oil. It spins at 6000 RPM...

hydraulic oil will run just fine for a while. It is much easier to run on the low pressure diesel engines than say a CRD or a duramax due to the extreme post injection pump pressures @ 23000 plus psi. Higher vescosity will make ur pump work harder and put more strain on ur injector O-rings etc. Do ur best to thin it out as close as you can to diesel fuel. Some will run different ratios of oil/diesel/kerosene/injector additive/cetane boost/gasoline/acetone.

a coworker of mine just recently blew out a seal on his duramax the high pressure of the fuel started to wash out the port in the head and destroyed the O-rings. End result he had to buy another head. He may be able to still reuse the old head since it didn't look quite that bad from the combustion chamber side, but you can definitely see where it started to wash out the injector seat.

I have burning oil(whatever I can get my hands on) in my 7.3 powerstroke for about 20K miles and no major issues. Of course it is a bit of a different animal on how the injection process works. An individual that services our huge transformer where I work runs straight transformer oil in his powerstroke. He never uses diesel unless he is out on the road for long trips. Note: newer transformer oil is very thin and contains no PCB's. They were outlawed many years ago. Pretty much purified mineral oil.

Heres an interesting article

I have noticed on my CRD that it likes used motor oil best. I am currently burning oils changes from a semi truck. It is probably 15W-40W. It burns excellent and gets great mileage. I do notice that if I put it too the floor the fuel system will set a code of P0108 which indicates manifold fuel pressure is too high. I think as long as I am careful with the throttle,I will not spike the fuel system and cause damage.
