Is it illegal to switch to run on grease? In California, one converter has been told he is a tax cheat and must obtain a "diesel fuel supplier" license. As sucha dealer he has to report how many gallons he uses and pay highway taxes on each gallon. It seems this is only the beginning. California says you have to have a license from the Meat and Poultry Inspection Branch to haul cooking grease away from eateries. To get this license you have to have $1 million in liability insurance. You are also suppose to get permission from the state Air Resource Board to burn fat. Even Governor Schwarzenegger has to pay the road tax of $.18 per gallon on the cooking oil he buys at Cosco to run in his Hummers. The Governor claims he is working on making it easier for drivers to use vegetable oil without becoming an outlaw. No wonder most converters are staying underground.

California.... Suffice it to say that I (and many around me) believe that most of the dumb useless laws that are here to "protect us" originate from California. Yes it is technically illegal to burn ANYTHING in your vehicle that you didn't pay road taxes on. This even includes additives purchase for that purpose. I'm sure all gun owners will soon be criminals too. If they want to prosocute me I say go for it. I will refuse to send my son to Obama's re-education camps (when they start). Hey thats 3 counts. I speed every now and again too. I wish people that hate California's politics would leave the state. What would the Govenator do if he lost all that tax revenue. He already can't afford to give people thier due tax returns. I'm voting for the San Andreas fault to blow California a little closer to Hawai'i. We're not that lucky though. Watch "Who killed the electric car". It will open your eyes to the dumbness radiating from your states lawmakers.

Don't ask, don't tell. Don't get stopped by the D.O.T.
Glad I don't live in Cali, though I can understand their strict laws to curb the horrible smog.

In Georgia (no emissions testing here) I've been stopped by the cops for speeding at least three times in my veggi-mobile, each time my fuel habit was brought up. One time I firmly believe it got me out of a ticket because the cop was interested in doing the same thing. No one has ever said anything to be about the fact that I am not paying road taxes, or using a EPA approved fuel. :goink:
It will probably happen tomorrow, now that I have bragged about it :(

My favorite roadside conversation went like this:
COP: "You run this thing on cooking grease?"
ME: "Yes sir!"
COP: "And it doesn't effect the power?"
ME: "Well, I got your attention, didn't I?"

He gave me a ticket.

All states and the Fed's use fuel taxes as an income source (most claim to use that for road maintenance)
if you're using a fuel that you didn't pay taxes on then you're a 'cheat' because they don't have the income.
It's also a big problem with hybrid's that get 40-50 mpg - the tax income is way down.

Some states have considered dropping fuel taxes and adding a mileage/year tax.

basically if you want roads - there has to be an income stream to build/maintain them.

Solution:
Take 50% of each congressman's income and force them to use the same healthcare that they are in the process of forcing down our throats. Make California pay 1 million dollars for each of the liberties they have taken away from Californians and any state that follows California's BS Laws should pay at least double that amount. Hey... after all that money is put in the pot they should be able to build that bridge to Europe and get rid of all road taxes, especially for commercial Owner Operators. It's funny what some people will believe huh?

So, I run WVO with a two tank heated system in California. I was told the line to use if questioned by smog or cops is "I have a parallel heated fuel line that I use to run certified biodiesel in subfreezing temperatures during the winter. The stock diesel fuel line has not been modified in any way."

Hopefully, that'll work when I go to smog!

EVERYTHING in California is illegal. They literally ran out of laws to create there. That's why so many are moving to Oregon so they can convert it into another California! (GO AWAY!)

uh, George W. , your retarded twin brother had a total of 29cents per gallon tax increase. Only US born US citizens can even run for president, which Obama is. Gov. Schwartz knows this which is why he has never attempted to run for president.

The government in California just needs to be wiped out and started over. I mean why should people be allowed to use another fuel source that would other wise be put into storage tanks then pumped through a furnace anyway? I mean either that or dumped down the drain in peoples homes and sent through our sewage treatment plants. I mean if your wife could fry you some chicken and then pour the grease into your fuel tank. This is also supposed to be a state that supports alternate energy sources I believe fat or vegi oils qualify don't they.

Probably till their Kenyan Dick-tator totally destroys America. :grim:

Sorry, just couldn't resist. When we are working hard in Washington to break our ties on foreign oil and to get support for alternative energy with this administration, because that's who we have to work with. Not GW! :banghead:

In Florida you can purchase an alternative fuel permit for $130. Then you can apply for an HOV lane permit and drive without a passenger.

Why the shake down for a permit?
What is the permit money used for?
I found where Florida has an Excise Tax Exemption for Biodiesel Production at Schools both public or private.

It was originally designed for CNG natural gas powered cars and you needed the permit to fill up at CNG stations. A local representative mad ethe adjustment for grease use. That was the figure that they think they are loosing in road tax. I questioned this guy and can we make an adjustment to say if you have the permet you are allowed to keep your own fuel at your home----In the city I live in you are not allowed more than 15 gallons of stored liquid. The law was for gasoline becasue people where keeping it around to run generators off of. But the way they make the law it is illegal to keep more than 15 gallons of water. This was from the fire inspector, who told me that in person.

The local rep is now running for Congress because he got term limited out. He has my vote.

Wow!
I thought NY had everyone beat on regulations. :grim:
Except for 5 counties (4 in NY City area) there are no regs. on Bulk Storage of Petroleum under 1,100 gallons. The Law applies both to Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) and Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs), or groupings of such tanks with a combined storage capacity of more than 1,100 gallons.
I just moved a 1,000 gals of WVO. Had more than we could process into biodiesel. I guess I couldn't do that in FL.
Does that limit of 15 gallons of stored liquid apply to the state of FL or just certain metropolitan areas.

That came from my cities fire officer. And I think it is atleast county wide. You can get a permit. But it has to be for something. Like a large whole house generator system and it has to be installed by a licensed contractor and hidden from view. I believe it is a rarely used law but it is there so people can rat on there nieghbors. I have a two hundred gallon plastic tank full of clean ready to use veg oil. I built a wall beside it so the nieghbors can not see it. And on the other side I have an 8 foot tall hedge so it can not be seen from the street.

Last month the hedge got bugs on it and lost 3/4 of its leaves, I put a tarp over my tank and sprayed and fertilzed real good the hedge is comming back slowly.
