Story on Bloomberg here

Relevant quotes for those that don't want to read full article:

Unlike hybrid vehicles such as Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius, which is propelled by a gasoline engine and an electric motor, Chrysler's cars would only tap electricity to power the wheels, with the on-board engine running just to recharge the batteries.

Chrysler's Jeep model would be able to travel 400 miles using 8 gallons of gasoline, the company said today. Plug-ins also can be charged at household outlets.

[...]

Production sites haven't been determined. The vehicles may be assembled at the plants used for the conventional versions of the same models, product chief Frank Klegon said. Two vehicles are identical to existing cars, the Chrysler Town and Country and the Jeep Wrangler, except for the power plant.

I like this quote in the press release:

“We are also exploring four-wheel-drive, in-wheel electric motors to demonstrate the full reach of ENVI’s advanced electric-drive technologies,”

At least they are experimenting. We haven't seen anything great out of Chrysler for a while.

If / when they do come out with the Unlimited EV, I'd buy one :-) Trade up the wife's KJ for one of these babies ...

Problem is that Chrysler LLC doesn't know which one of these cars they want to put on the market in 2010.

I love the fact that they stole a LOTUS body and put dodge all over it.

Love the ORIGINALITY from the new leadership.

awesome...and check out all that CHROME!!!!!!!! bling bling!!!

i think it is a step in the right direction for chrylser and the Jeep brand --> as long as they make the Jeep ev vehicles 4x4 and not just 2x4 shells with electric.

You mean to tell me there was no perfectly good car in the Dodge line up that could do the job  !!!!!!

Well, it's not the worst case of badge engineering i've ever seen.

Really? Are you that narrow minded?
Have you seen the Tesla electric car? It's a Lotus Elise. Apparently Lotus is working with car companies wanting to show off electric cars. Chrysler didn't "steel" the body.

Doesn't know which one? I bet they know which one. But, you need to read between the lines. They put the Extended Version on the Wrangler and T&C. That means they can put it on other SUVs and probably event the 300 or Charger.

I'm not sure why (other than price) we haven't seen 4wd hybrid vehicles with orbital gears in each wheel to increase the torque on the ground. Like the monster trucks use.

I dunno ... can the motor handle the 35" tires?

I wonder what the price tag will be in comparison to the gasoline engine?

The local news reported that the Chrysler versions would run less than the Chevy Volt ($40k)

I did some more reading on the Lotus body. They did indeed enter into an agreement with Lotus to build an electric car for both companies. So maybe the sports car with Dodge all over it could actually be a car that Lotus will sell?

It is the 2008 Lotus Europa.
Not for sale in the U.S.A.

The Dodge EV might be the first car out.
