In a crazy world where the temperature of the earth will kill us all in 25 years I was wondering.... especially with my CRD costing me £440 per year to tax does biodiesel reduce the emissions of the vehicle for when I take it for its anual test (MOT)???

I hope the emissions do not go up!

Yes and no. There are 5 main emissions regulated: hydrocarbon(HC), carbon monoxide(CO), nitrous oxides(NOx)(combination of NO, NO2 and NO3), particulates(PM) and carbon dioxide(CO2). Most biofuels have a very high cetane rating ranging from 50-65, whereas European fuel is generally around 50-53. The higher the cetane the less the ignition delay and usually a cleaner burn. With this in mind biofuel will generally reduce HC and CO around 15%, reduce PM 20-40%, increase NOx about 6-10% and increase CO2 5-8%. The CO2 increase is due to the lower BTU content of the biofuel and the NOx increase is due to an earlier start of combustion. All these numbers can vary based on feedstock used for making the biofuel. Do you know what emissions are checked during the annual inspection?

All they test for in Washington is opacity. I fill up with bio in my TDI Jetta and CRD KJ and test out less than 1%. Youre allowed 20%.

When we get rid of the "Hot Air" coming out of Washington, DC the earth will be fine. :SOMBRERO:
