darn it, this is getting me paranoid. My CRD is still fairly young (no fuel filter change yet), but I have had the notorious 55-60 mph bucking consistent with others reported air in fuel issues.
My problem is winter is coming, and we bought our CRD in part to use for skiing on Mt. Hood. I need a heater element in the fuel system.
You can add in a separate heater before the fuel filter, and leave the factory heater unplugged to avoid this problem.
I've posted this idea before. Stanadyne sells a 12V 150W "side load" pencil style fuel heater with built-in thermostat, threaded to screw into the ports on their metal filter heads. Two of the available thread types are 1/4" NPT and 3/8" NPT. Cost is $40 to $45.
You can go to your local hardware store and purchase the necessary pipe fittings and hose connectors to build it's own separate housing and install it in the fuel line prior to the factory fuel filter.
For power, connect it to the harness for the factory fuel heater.
This way, you'll have a functional fuel heater with no risk of meltdown, and minimal changes to the vehicle if you're really concerned about the warranty and determined to wait for the govt and Chrysler to issue a recall to fix this problem.
For my part, they usually have that little blurb included in any recall that if you've already had to do repairs out of your own pocket to address the problem, you can send them a letter along with the receipts and (eventually) you'll be reimbursed for the cost of repairs. I'm saving all my receipts for the Stanadyne filter and Omega temp probe.
For that matter, any money spent to install a heater as I outlined above, that specifically addresses the problem noted in the recall, should be reimbursable as well.
