darn it, this is getting me paranoid. My CRD is still fairly young (no fuel filter change yet), but I have had the notorious 55-60 mph bucking consistent with others reported air in fuel issues.

My problem is winter is coming, and we bought our CRD in part to use for skiing on Mt. Hood. I need a heater element in the fuel system.

You can add in a separate heater before the fuel filter, and leave the factory heater unplugged to avoid this problem.

I've posted this idea before. Stanadyne sells a 12V 150W "side load" pencil style fuel heater with built-in thermostat, threaded to screw into the ports on their metal filter heads. Two of the available thread types are 1/4" NPT and 3/8" NPT. Cost is $40 to $45.

You can go to your local hardware store and purchase the necessary pipe fittings and hose connectors to build it's own separate housing and install it in the fuel line prior to the factory fuel filter.

For power, connect it to the harness for the factory fuel heater.

This way, you'll have a functional fuel heater with no risk of meltdown, and minimal changes to the vehicle if you're really concerned about the warranty and determined to wait for the govt and Chrysler to issue a recall to fix this problem.

For my part, they usually have that little blurb included in any recall that if you've already had to do repairs out of your own pocket to address the problem, you can send them a letter along with the receipts and (eventually) you'll be reimbursed for the cost of repairs. I'm saving all my receipts for the Stanadyne filter and Omega temp probe.

For that matter, any money spent to install a heater as I outlined above, that specifically addresses the problem noted in the recall, should be reimbursable as well.

That Racor(Stanadyne) filter has an optional fuel heater with integral t-stat, installs right in the top of the head, heats fuel in the head and filter element - also has optional Water in Fuel sensor, installs in the sight-bowl - also available is the head with the primer bulb - totally duplicates the CRD filter element in function - except for the leaks, burn-outs, and potential fire hazard, of course - easily available Wix and Purolator replaceable filter elements - about 130bucks for the assembly - go to Racordotcom for further info

I hope all of you finding leaks and or burned connectors are filing a report with the NHTSA  With winter coming it would be nice to get some sort of resolution as us in cold weather states might actually need the hearters

Just checked mine, I unplugged it and it was soaked in fuel. Not good. I primed it and no fuel seemed to gush out, but it is now dark out and difficult to see with the only working flashlight I have. I plugged it back in as I did not want it to suck air and leave my wife stranded, and I figure she drives less than 10 minutes to and from work so hopefully it'll be OK. Will the stealer warranty this? I am due for a new fuel filter anyhow... Guess I'll have to call the stealer tomorrow.

The stealer better. Also report it to the Feds. Finally consider the MagLite option for your CRD

Mines an 06 and still under warranty... grr, seems like the way to go is simply installing the full Racor replacement assembly and calling it done. I'd rather the dealer pay for it, but I'm nervous about waiting.

Oh well... anyone want to buy a couple of Mopar filters for the factory plastic head?

On the ball joints and I believe the TC Chrysler paid for outsourced parts that were used to replace OEM recalled stuff if you could support it with invoices.

I just checked the plug on my fuel heater... it looks ok. Any thoughts on how to minimize the risk of problems, short of replacing the whole thing with a Racor? Dielectric grease on the prongs?

If you live below the "it don't snow much, down here" line, you prolly won't have much trouble with it, cause it's seldom required in our warmer winters - other than that, the dielectric will exclude moisture(as will Diesel fuel), making for better contact, but prolly won't help with the constant heat cycles in colder climes, which just serves to highlight a defective design, which is a heating element buried in thermoplastic

Try it - it couldn't hurt

Does Dodge use a fuel heater on the Cummins powered trucks?

We all know that there was a gentleman from the NHTSA looking into the fuel heater assembly, when that came up the NHTSA website didn't list an investigation, it now does ...opened as of Aug 8th.

Expect a recall and really folks check these fittings!

This is great! Unfortuneately, it looks like a fire did result...perhaps those pics from Texas we saw. I hope no one was hurt.

This is great news. I have held off on replacing the factory setup in the hopes that a factory fix would come. I bleed the air out regularly, and I am always suprised by how much air accumulates in there in a couple of weeks. If it weren't bled on a routine basis, I can definitely see how the heater element would be exposed to trapped air and melt.

Hopefully the fix will be a lift pump and bleed into the return. :)
