PARK and NEUTRAL require minimal fuel at idle rpm - selecting any gear-range requires more fuel as transmission loads the torque convertor - moving uses even more fuel as torque requirement increases - naturally an air leak will be more obvious as engine loading increases and more fuel is demanded

I thought this was a sticky
We have fixes on the CRD tech - but we don't have the original problem
so can a Mod either sticky this - or put it over in Tech
That way the new CRD owners will understand - why we push for the Racor/ New fuel head?

Done :)

Have had my '06 CRD one week, checked the fuel heater connection last night, it was wet with fuel and had a black scorch mark in the yellow area of the plug.

This forum is great, it contains invaluable information.

I would replace the fuel filter head with the new Mopar version... My father's CRD had the same issue, and shortly afterwards he immediately started having air in the fuel issues. The new fuel filter head seems to have resolved the problem.

Excellent, managing to fix all the problems my Jeep is having thanks to this forum :D

To conclude, my Jeep has the burnt fuel heater, and is leaking air/fuel.

Can i simply unplug the cable, or must i try and seal the connection the the fuel system?

Suggestions on how i would seal it?

It never really gets cold here so fuel heater is unnecessary.

Thanks

You can try covering the empty heater plug socket with a piece of tape... but I would recommend replacing the filter heat with the new Mopar filter head, especially since your stock unit is already leaking.

Unplugged mine today at 64k miles. Looks brand new. Was scared to do it when first reading about this because I live in stifling heat and was sure mine was burnt. I have taped up the connections with duct tape and will leave unplugged until I take my yearly trip to Durango, CO in the winter.

It probably wasn't even coming on down there where you live. Has to be so cold before it activates. If you were worried about the connections getting dirty, you could plug it back in, then just pull the fuse for it out.

So what are the symptoms of this? My wife's jeep just started suddenly dying while driving it. It was difficult to start, but started, CEL is on. I can push easily push the "fuel plunger" 2-3 times before it stiffens up? I just cleaned the EGR. Thanks!

Post subject:  why unplug it? Locate the relay and pull that

I found mine was hotter than a mother. Seems to work pulling relay. My plug is still in it's home. Agree it's a must do thing on CRD!

This info is great.
Does anyone have the part number for the new filter head?
Also is there a place to go on line where we can save a couple of $$. I am sure the dealer will be very pricey!!!!

Thanks all

I have an in tank lift pump, so it doesnot make sense for me to up-plug my fuel filter heater.
Or am i missing something?

Does anyone have pics as to how they spliced the wires together? I understand how the one-time snap plug-in is put together but want clarification as to how the the brash clips work (or should I even care, connectivity is connectivity as long as the load can be carried). I understand the rubber should shrink wrap but would like pics on how the wires were actually spliced together if possible.

Thanks,
B2

My recommendation is that you disconnect and examine your heater plug. If it is discolored and burned (as mine was), then contact Chrysler corporate. Ask them to cover having your dealer install the beefer replacement water-separator/heater unit. When I did this a few months ago, they wanted me to take my CRD to the dealer and pay him to "diagnose" the problem first (that is also what the dealer wanted to do--for about $100). I told them that it didn't need to be diagnosed. It was a design problem and had already been diagnosed many times on many CRDs.

I declined their offer, went to the parts department and bought the replacement water-separator/heater unit, then paid an independent diesel garage to replace the unit. Less than a week later, Chrysler called me and told me that if I would take my Jeep to the dealer, they would pay for replacement of the unit. I told them that I had already replaced it outside of their dealer system, so they reimbursed me for the cost of the assembly. If I had waited for another week, I would have been able to get it replaced free of charge.

Naturally, no need to get ugly with them when you are asking them to help. Just be clear as to the situation (it was a safety hazard in my opinion) and firm as to what your expectations are.

Good luck!

Wow, there are a lot of posts here. Is there a bottom line: Did they ever issue a recall?

No recall ... not even a TSB ...

After more than 30 minutes arguing with my dealer today trying to locate and agree upon an "approved Chrysler repair" I left with the parts in disgust.

The "Senior" diesel tech at my local 5* dealer told me that he recently "'had' to break the valve cover off'" while working on another customer's rig... doesn't exactly instill confidence! He tells me "Well, we are all still sort of learning these Mercedes engines... after being a Cummins tech for 20+ years some of this stuff still baffles me"

Guess I am about as qualified to perform the upgrade =p

If you care about the results
- you are more qualified than a lot of the dealership Techs....
