500ppm is low, it's going away soon, 15ppm is ultra low - with a few exceptions -
highway stations were supposed to convert in 2007 - with a no later than date of 2010.

a steady diet of 500ppm will probably cause more EGR problems (search for ORM)

Theoretically, the CRD is meant to use the 15 ppm stuff. Some anecdotal references say that the reduction of sulfur has left the lubricity of the fuel in the crapper, but reputable suppliers add lubricant additives to combat this (and the best appears to be B100).

ULSD burns cleaner (less sulfur compounds in the emissions) and seems to result in smoother running (or did for me).

If there are still stations in texas (home of the oil rig) selling LSD, I'd shy away from them. It means they don't do enough business to justify the replacement of filters, labeling, etc until mandated by law. Everything I've seen anywhere near a highway in GA has been ULSD for more than a year, now.
