I started tearing appart the Jeep today. I thought I would post this little adventure as it unfolds. So far I have removed the ARB bumper, grill, headlight bracket & electric fan. It looks like the intercooler has a lot of bugs, leaves & dirt in it.

Intercooler might have some oil in it too. I drained about 8 oz.

Good luck with your timing belt project.

Very good job; I'll be watching your progress on the timing belt/water pump replacement. Nice pictures too.

Thanks, I have been reading about doing this but never found many pictures in one place. I have learned alot on this forum so I thought I would take my time & give a little to the community.

Has anyone ever thought about moving the water pump? I dont have the time to do it but. I think a serpentine water pump could be put in place of the viscous heater & an idler put where the water pump is. It would make it much easier to replace the water pump & not have to remove the rear timing cover.

I'm glad I spent the extra $35 to get the complete gasket kit. It comes with all the seals on the rear of the inner timing cover, also the front center gasket & all new bolt grommets. I used brake cleaner to remove the antifreeze residue from inside the cover. All the gaskets fell apart & the grommets were hard & brittle.

Be carful while threading the tensioner bolt into the cover. I messed up the threads a little & it started to eat up the threads on the bolt. The threads for the tensioner have a heli coil. I removed the coil, got a heli coil set at NAPA & installed the tensioner. I then installed the belt & put one of the idler pulleys on last instead of the tensioner. I made a tool to hold the cam pulleys, it is similar to vm1055. I cut up a 3/8" pin & welded them to a disc I cut out of 1/4" steel. I then welded a nut on one side to hold it with a breaker bar while I torqued the cam bolt to 80 ft-lb

I had the same thing happen to me with the tensioner threads getting pulled out.
I put in a new heli coil and used a stud instead of the bolt.
Made sure that stud was in there as tight as possible before reinstalling.
Its been about ten months since I did that and its held up good.

I got the Weeks 1 & 2 kits installed. I ordered them with my timing belt kit from IDParts. The polished stage 1 was on backorder until April 8. I called them up & they shipped the black powdercoated for no extra charge.

Here's the pile of parts I have left from the EGR system.

I cleaned the MAP sensor.

This morning I filled her up with antifreeze & fired her up. I don't think the starter made one revolution before she was running.

I have had my Jeep since July 2007. It had 16,000 miles then & has 144,000 now. Thanks to this forum I have done all the work on it since it was out of warranty at 36,000. I live north of St. Louis, Missouri.

There is enough room to replace the timing belt & water pump without removing the radiator & intercooler. I wanted to test the intercooler for leaks, clean everything & be able to get good pictures. Next time I'm just going in from the top.

I really like how you marked the belt and cam tooth, would make it easy transferring those marks to the new belt! Wish I would've thought of that.
