Post subject:  Racor Fuel Filter Installation Details
On September 23, 2008 at 43,000 miles my fuel heater failed. I had to plug the fuel heater connector with epoxy putty to stop the fuel leaking through the electrical socket! Thanks to L.O.S.T. I knew my options. I installed a Racor 245R filter. Here's how.

Great write up. I never got the WIF sensor because i thought that it might not work unless i bought the ugly looking Racor display. I am ordering the sensor now, thanks. Your link for b-line filter on the DIY needs to be corrected. Also, b-line has the WIF sensor listed cheaper on their site than the other source.

I list the individual prices in the parts list, but about $250 in materials.

if you are around what was the part # for the plug that you install.
was 54200207 or 54200211 and are they the same as the one that the CRD have; reason is if I want to go back to the regular filter for warranty purpose on the engine and transfer case etc.

Both. One is the male and one the female. These are the same brand as used elsewhere on the CRD but not the same as used in the fuel area I think. Besides, the Racor heater and WIF sensor are new plugs, so if you do go back it will be some work.

Or you could match all the plugs and make adapters: APEX <-> APEX=====Racor <->Racor etc..

One key to matching to existing Apex parts is the "index". Each index number indicates a slightly different and incompatible shape in the same family. Generally the color matches the index. You can match the index shapes of parts you have using the CAD drawings on the NTI site.

I am in process of buying these parts for my CRD.

I had difficulty ordering the connectors for the temp sensor from NTI.

They recommended that I go to Mouser, their sister company.

Much easier, no minimum order.

Also, when you view the datasheet for the connectors, there is a link to what contacts go in them. Nice.

There are two types of plating on the contacts, one is just tin. They specify using PdAuNi plating for diesel applications. You want to order these.

Another note is that when I ordered the temp sensor from Omega, they offered a free gift if I took a survey at the end of the ordering process. I am thinking, 'like what, a hat?".

It is a digital multimeter!

Not as nice as my Fluke, I am sure.

But, hey, free meter!

I have one more note before I begin the install, and that is that the temp sensor has a dash number at the end of it that indicates the length of the wire.

I saw the -80 on a web page and ordered it that way. The wire is about 80 inches long.

I think that a -8 or -10 would suffice here.

By doing this switch over, do you lose the manual push primer? I don't see it in the last picture with the racor installed. I've air locked my CRD at least twice.... i'm wondering how you would reprime without the manual pump?

There is a primer, it is just not obvious in the pics because it pushes in and then screws in a bit to stay tucked out of the way. You just unscrew the knob, it pops out, you pump and then screw it back in when done.

I had the same issue , i plugged the fuel heater connector with epoxy putty to stop the fuel leaking through the electrical socket and as it is hard to find parts in algeria :banghead: ,iam asking if there is no problem with this connector plugged forever please advice

Only if it gets cold in Algeria.

A lot of people ran with it unplugged all summer long.

Hello all,
I installed this racor set up on my 05 crd and it works great, however, I am getting a check engine light and a code, P0180 fuel tempsensor circut A. Any suggestions?

Yes, omega probe and NTI two way connector. Connections looked good but how would I test it?

The thermocouple has 2200 ohms of resistance at 25C. You could disconnect the temp probe and put a 2200 ohm 1/2watt resistor across the leads to simulate the thermocouple. Verify that the CEL clears, If it does, then you have a problem either with your Thermocouple temp probe or the wiring.

Caution, There is 5 volts between the leads, don't short the leads together when the key is on, could damage the ECM.

2200 ohm 1/2 watt resistors are available at any radio shack, 5 for a buck.

disconnect the temp sensor, attach the lead wires to a resistor, turn the key to on or actually start it?

Start it. I think the CEL will clear on its own, If not you'll have to clear it using a OBDII reader. if the CEL comes back immediately with the same code, the problem is probably not the temp sensor.

If you happen to have a light duty electric fuel lift pump before the filter you can do as I did, put a T at the exit fitting and place a radiator drain valve in it. Then when you change filters or otherwise wish to bleed air from the filter simply turn the key to the on position and twist the valve to crack it open until the air is gone and fuel is coming out. :)
