Hi
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty 2.5 CRD. She starts easy , no problem with power, and if I drive relaxed I can drive forever there is no problems. As soon as I accelerate hard, pushing the revs high, and I slow down and stop, she idles only on 3 cyl. Then if I give a little bit of gas, the 4th cyl will come in and idles perfect. If I leave the gas she idles on 3 cyl again. This will carry on until I switch off the Jeep and leave it to stand for 30min, than it is back to normal, until I push her again. Can it be a faulty injector. I had the Jeep at the agents, but they cannot find a problem.

Regards

This is a diesel right? Sounds like you may have a air leak in the fuel head. Maybe you just need to bleed the air out of the head.

Yes it is a diesel. I have bled the fuel system up to the fuel filter, how do I bleed the fuel in the head?

Well on the 2.8l there is a pump button on top of the fuel head, you need to pump that to prime the system, while loosening the bleed nipple to allow the air to escape until just fuel comes out, then tighten the fitting, your done.

Howdy no fear welcome to LOST

FYI - the main Diesel section is the Liberty CRD...Love that Torque!!! section

Tech tends to be for answers after they've known

which is why you haven't gotten too much response over here.

I know that we've had several folks with a single injector problems - there's a way to test them (I don't remember - I try a link if I can find it)
and then you have to pull the problem injector and get it to Bosch service.
- the technique to pull the injector can be an issue also.

and FYI 2 - the Noob guide - lots of good information.

How do you know it is idling on only 3 cylinders?

You need to try get some codes out....the 2002 CRD does work with the "key" trick.

Turn the ignition ON/OFF rapidly 4 times without starting the engine.
On the forth ON sequence...leave ignition ON and the odometer should display codes starting from the oldest to the newest...it takes a few attempts to get the ON/OFF sequence to work.

Bear in mind that using this method sometimes the last two digits are transposed!

The early Export CRDs have a Racor filter head....looks different to the newer Racor filter heads everyone here is fitting but the pumping action is similar.

Have you replaced the filter recently and have you cleaned the MAP sensor on top of the intake manifold? :?

Hi
I have changed the filters and map sensor. I am thinking it could be the EGR valve.
It sound and shakes like it is idling on 3 cyl

The EGR valve does not do much at idle unless it has seized up in the open position.

It is easy to disable the EGR on the early CRDs, next to the air filter is a small black plastic solenoid with two wires coming out of it and a small paper air filter dangling below it and two small vacuum pipes connected on top.

If you remove the small rubber pipe on the outer side you can then screw in a small self-tapping screw into the nipple exposed on the plastic housing....then replace the small rubber pipe over the screw.

The ECU does not check that the EGR is not working on the early CRDs...only posts a code if you pull off the electrical connector on the solenoid. :)

I have bypassed the EGR valve, still no luck. Looks like I will have to remove the injectors and get them tested.

The injectors have numbers stamped into them...make a note of which injector goes where so you can put them back in their original positions.....the numbers are programmed into the ECU so as to cater for the different flow rates of the injectors.

When you remove the injectors, check if any one of them has been leaking.

You can download the 2002 KJ Service Manuals here...courtesy of Sir Sam.

First download the 2.5_2.8 Export Diesel additional material....it covers our Export diesel engines.

Then if you like download 2002 the Service Manual which covers the rest of the vehicle and includes the circuit diagrams. :)
