Kapalzynski,

great stuff there..... I have a question: Due to the difference in height from the OEM unit, is the unit going in tight? Can you take a few pics of the unit installed in the engine bay?

As you can see from the photos below, I rerouted just the end of the wire harness to ensure no rubbing. Everything else looks to have good clearance.

Some installed Photos:

I've been MIA for a while, but I thought you might like to know that you have my father and I both interested in your thermostat design. Keep up the good work!

Just and update...waiting for this tank to run through. So far EVIC is showing 26.6 with mostly highway speeds, but rolling hills. Also have had a coupple 24* F and 26* F mornings and 2 days of strong headwinds heading home for the return trip (driving into 52 knots one day, close to 50 on the second). Gotta love Colorado. :) I imagine the EVIC is still off a coupple mpg's, but hopefully not as far off as stock. Once warm economy seems good, it takes probably 5 miles of the 15 to get to operating temp each way, so I would expect straigh hwy to look much better, especially w/o hills, winds, etc. Only time will tell. I can't wait to get through this tank, it looks like I will be sitting with 100 more miles on this tank (maybe more) compared to before the GDE hot tune and the thermostat. I usually filled up between 300 and 330miles to work and back.

Glad to see the interest. I am still kind of letting the current design run a bit and see how it does. There has however been 2 people so far who want orders filled so If you are ready to buy, PM me and I'll keep you in order on the waiting list. I want to run at least 2 more tanks with the current setup before shipping any orders out, but I have 2 cores I can machine and get ready to ship sitting on my shelf. I'm going to work on those as soon as I can to have them ready. I will be making them in batches of 2 as I get the old cores returned to me.

The Flex fan setup should be ready wednesday so I will run that next tank with the Flex fan and 192* stat again, then Flex fan and 180* stat probably after that for more of a stock economy comparison.

Remember, these kits can be ordered with 180* or 192* depending on preference (or both for an additional $10.00). I added everything up and I will do it for $100 even (shipping included to USA EX Hawaii and Alaska) pluss a $100 refundable core charge. $110 + $100 refundable core with both 180* and 192* stats.

Sounds good. I got you down for # 5 on the list now, but with your own core, that can push turn around time up a bit since while I wait for the first 2 core returns I can do yours. :)

Just a little background; I've been a member for a while now, and am a numbskull when it comes to mechanical ability and don't own that many tools. Originally, I leased my vehicle, kept mileage below the allowance, purchased when lease ended, then, purchased an extended warrantee when I bought the car. Even though I don't do my own maintenance or mods, I check in here on the CRD forum 3-4 times a week at least, just to see what's happening. You guys are the best, and this latest example of a member coming up with a solution to a problem, then making it better, is why I keep coming back. Kudos on the thermostat.

The above said, and a little off topic....thinking forward: What are guys doing to keep these CRD's from becoming rust buckets down the road, before the engine and drive components wear out?

Well, cars will rust...nothing you can do about that, but you can do your best to prevent it. Undercoat, etc. Wash your car frequently in the winter if the roads are treated where you live. Fix rock chips and body work before it causes rust, wax frequently. Thats the main stuff, I'd expect a good 20 years w/o too many problems. :)

Posted my best tank ever to work and back. I hit 24.0 mpg calculated w/ no adjustments. I've heard our speedo's are a little bit off, and that might make it slightly better. Anyway, this is with the GDE tune 192* thermostat, stock fan clutch.

My previous average to work and back ranged from 18 winter - 22 summer so this is pretty good. :)

Next tank I will run Flex fan/192*/ GDE Hot tune

Tank after that will be Flex fan 180* (roughly stock temp) and GDE Hot tune to compare the thermostat econo0my differences.

I just put on the new flex fan and adapter. It looks sweet and DEFINITELY moves a lot more air than the factory fan/clutch even when it was locked up.

I started a new topic for this setup:

Heres a quick pic, but check out the new topic for the information and more photos.

In my haste, I saw only 2 bolts to be removed. No one else make this mistake please.
Unfortunately, I cracked off the lower corner of my donor thermostat.

Unless some kind person ships (I'll pay shipping) their old thermostat for me to Kapalczynski, I guess I am out of this. Where is that Smilie icon with the tear?

Thank you.

I see only 2 bolts on that as well... I'll have to look at the one that is already off my old engine to see where the others were. How many were there?

The bolt labeled '3' is actually 2 bolts; you can see the dotted lines split into two.

So there are four 10mm bolts total. 3 sideways into the block and 1 on top attached to the front bracket.
