KJJET - the only thing I've done so far is the EHM...I used a clear hose and its crazy how sooty and oily it is.

I'll be doing the GDE tune for sure but not until spring. Too much snow on the ground still to be stuck without the Jeep.

Someone is telling me to start using Redline Diesel fuel catalyst...not sure what it does yet but they think it will start cleaning things up for me. Any thoughts?

I don't have any history with Redline Diesel fuel catalyst. It may help? But you will still be putting the bad stuff in your engine that damages vital parts such as Rockers and bearings. Get a GDE tune ASAP for sure.

Good luck with your Jeep CRD!

I will add to this that if you take the battery out and the fuel filter, you have a lot of room to get in and do the work. I did not need the 24 inches of extensions to get the the elbow off. I was able to use a 6 inch extension and just work it up behind the elbow to get off the two screws that are behind it. With everything out of the way, It was easier for me to just use my hands to get in and remove the glow plug caps, the 90 degree pliers were not working for me. Having a flashlight will help too.Just keep the computer on and the page saved and you have a great resource. I will also add in that it might help if you take the skid plate off, this way if you drop a screw or several, they are just waiting for you on the ground.

Good glow plugs are .5 to 1.5 ohms measured cold. The truck will throw trouble codes P1260 to P1267 when the plugs go bad. Typically the bad plug will read in the hundreds of ohms.

Great write up with clear photos, thanks.

I'm planning on diagnosing which (if not all) of my 2002 2.5 CRD glow plugs is/are breaking down on start-up and then changing it (or them) using your reference material. Do the ohms figures quoted above apply to the 2002 model?

If not, do you happen know the correct reading?

Cheers
Andrew

Glow plugs, like light bulbs, usually are either good or bad. There is very little chance of in-between.
So for all glow plugs, any vehicle, they are good if they measure less than a few (say 5) ohms and bad if they measure in the hundreds or more.

Bear in mind that your 2002 2.5 CRd has 11 volt glow plugs .....same as mine....so you need to get the correct ones from the Jeep Dealer as the 7 volt Ecotec ones do not apply to us.

I could try measure the resistance of my glow plugs for you but even with my high quality Fluke Digital meter it is difficult to try and measure such a low resistance....expect to read almost a short if the glow plug is OK or an open circuit if the glow plug is completely blown.

The glow plugs on our 2.5 CRDs are powered directly by the two large relays sitting in the relay compartment under the hood.....you may want to replace those two relays or open them up and clean the contacts.....lots of Amperes go through those contacts. The ECU on our CRDs does not monitor the condition of the glow plugs as is done on the newer CRD models.

Great write up. My only issue is I am not seeing connectors to the glow plugs like you have in the picture. Does anybody have a picture with the exact glow plug location circled that they could post?

Papaindigo has some engine pictures that may help, here:
viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74594

But the glow plugs are hard to see without removing the parts in the write-up.

Squeeto,

I followed your procedure pretty closely to put the Etecnos in this week. I did have to borrow a younger pair of hands to get the intake elbow and the rest bolted back together.

New Etecnos read a uniform .6 ohm.

If I were to do this again, I'd order an 'O' ring. Price is $2.70 USD and takes three days to get here, four if they mistakenly send it to Boise first. I re-used one gasket and the O ring. Red RTV sealed everything up nicely.

I need to get all 4 glow plugs replaced. Already have the plugs. Curious to know what the manual says for shop time on how long this should take? Anyone have this done and willing to share how much it cost in labor? Thanks!

First thing.

1. What plugs did you get? 5v or 7v?

Ok good!

With the 7v drop in's, you do just that just change them.

1. Remove the battery
2. Remove the fuel filter housing.
3. Remove the alternator and holding bracket.
4. Remove the Intake elbow. (tough part)
The Glow plugs are located under the intake elbow.
5. Spray the old Glow plugs with penetrating oil.
6. Using a deep socket and long extension remove the plugs.
7. Apply some anti-seize to the threads of each new plug.
8. install.
9. Reinstall everything in reverse.

How long will it take? Well it took me 3 hours. But I have had all of these items out before. Experience pays off.
If you can get someone to do it under 6 hours? That would be good.

Best of luck
KJJET

I think I have read book time is 5 hours.

I did mine recently, and having never done this on the Jeep, spent a fair bit of time figuring out how to attack the various fasteners that need to come off/ on. Even with that, I was tracking to R&R in just about 5 hours. That is until I got to the stuck #4 plug that took about 5 hours alone to get out in one piece.

With one round of experience, the 3 hour figure doesn't seem unreasonable, nor does the 6 hours of paid shop time.

Thank you all very much for your input! I have an appointment with a mechanic today in Sante Fe, NM that was recommended by another LOST member. On the phone they said $550 for labor and parts, which sounded pretty good to me, but when I mentioned I already had the glow plugs they were not sure about a rate quote, so I'll find out in a few hours and post back with results.

Awesome write up! I am facing the replacement of the glow plug nr.4 and, considering that I do not have all the tools with me, I asked the dealer. Came out with a 200$ glow plug and 2 hrs labour. Fortunately internet comes always handy in this cases. I am going to buy a glow plug from ETECNO, which is fairly close to me (I live in Tuscany, Italy) and replace it myself with this guide. I just have to figure out if there's a 5v or a 7v in there. I will let you guys know how it goes.

Dear all, thanks for your awesome support. Here are some info that could be useful. As Hexus pointed out, Jeep Liberty 2007 2.8L CRD 120kw came out with a 5v glow plug system. Yesterday I had my 4th cylinder glow plug changed (time=15 min, cost=a hand shake) and now it works just fine. The part number for the original glow plugs is 68020557AA, just in case you are looking for the BOSCH plugs. I do recommend the italians ETECNO Gx2123 by the way, they are totally metallic, no ceramic parts, and they fit just fine. I think I'll change the remaining plugs when I'll have some more time. Cheers
