Post subject:  Timing cam pin dimensions

For those of you that might want to make your own intake/exhaust cam locking pins the dimensions are as follows:
Best I can do by hand with analog calipers. I don't at this time have the thread size/pitch although I do know it's metric.

PS - absent data on thread size/pitch just pop one of the cam pin hole plugs to take with you for that information when buying bolts. Both sides are the same thread size/pitch.

Miller 1052 - Intake pin
Image
Hex head - 0.75" across flats
Overall length 2.96"
Shaft length (base of hexagonal head to tip including threaded section) - 1.76"
Shaft diameter of the thicker section - 0.315" for 1.39" of the above shaft length (Note diameter of threaded section is 0.391")
Shaft diameter of 1st step down of the tip section - 0.275" for 0.3" of the above shaft length
the final 0.08" of the above shaft length is beveled at something like a 75 degree angle to create a 0.2" diameter flat at the pin's tip - I presume this bevel is to help guide the pin into the cam pin hole and that the 0.275" section is what actually locks the cam in place hence that is the critical dimension.

Miller 1053 - Exhaust pin - identical except as noted below
Image
Hex head - 0.58" across flats
Overall length 1.932"
Shaft length (base of hexagonal head to tip including threaded section) - 1.65"
Shaft diameter of the thicker section is the same but the length of that section is only 1.25" of the above shaft length.

Thanks for this excellent info! According to your dimensions they're M10. It's not clear but I think I see two full threads in just under 1/10" which would make it a fine pitch, I'd guess 0.75mm or, more likely, 1mm. You should be able to measure this with your calipers.

They are M10 x 1 pitch

I made two fo them, using 75mm bolts full thread.

For the crank locking pin use a m8 x 1.25 x 75mm bolt, grind the threads to match bolt size, gring half of the head, make a pointed tip, and voila.

I just changed the head gasket on my crd. Phew, what a job !!!

Thanks for this info. Im thinking about trying to make my own. For those who have, what kind of wheel did you use on your grinder? Probably a very novice question but ive only used for woodworking and never metal.

I couldn't find the screws locally so I turned my pins out of some bar stock using the above dimensions.

Whatever came with your grinder should be fine for grinding the screws. It will be either aluminum oxide or silicon carbide.
