Remove the pins from fly wheel and cams, test your timing for few complete turns and you’re good to go.
Make sure you let the air out before you start (air out the filter), and after few spins and if you didn’t forget to hook up a sensor of effed up something else the engine will start.
Are you suggesting to try starting it and let run for a few seconds (to make sure things are right) before finishing putting everything else back together?
You should first turn the engine by hand, clockwise, to make sure it doesn't get stuck due to misalignment of the engine. Then, if it turns smooth, it's safe to attempt cranking the engine.
