The wix says 2 micron nominal, and then 3-6 micron something or other. I didn't want to reread that massive article you linked a long while back, but what did they advise for max particle size?

Filter Data:
Primary Fuel Filter – Non OEM WIF Sensor Port Thread: ½ x 20 IN
Mounting Thread Size: 16 X1.5 MM (same as OEM)
Donaldson Filter Part #P550588 11 micron rating @ 99% efficiency
Sensor Port Thread ½ x 20
Donaldson Clear drain bowl Part No. P569758
Donaldson Clear drain bowl Twist & Drain Valve with 1/2"-20 UNF Threaded Port Sensor / Donaldson Part #P550865
Racor 1/2"-20 UNF WIF Sensor / Racor Part #RK 30964

Did you have to slice in connectors or anything like in the Racor install thread, or with the above parts it's just plug and play? Sorry if you already mentioned this :dizzy:

you do not have to splice any hoses. Just replace hose from outlet side from original filter head to inlet side of secondary filter head and attach hose that goes to engine CP3 fuel pump to outlet side of new or secondary filter.

BTW you can also get brass right angle fittings that reduce from 1/2 inch NPT to 3/8 inch NPT on amazon for about $6 each . That way you don't have to use reducer bushings etc. IIRC the WIX filter head I used had 1/2 inch threads.

All the plumbing is basically plug and play!
Remove the outlet hose on the OEM filter head and move it to the outlet of the new secondary filter head, then install a short piece of fuel hose from the outlet of the OEM filter head to the inlet of the new secondary filter head. Done!
Only splicing required were the two wires for the 1/2"x 20 thread WIF Racor sensor. I saved the OEM WIF just in case I ever need it again...

Any concern of extra fuel system restriction by adding the secondary filter without having an electric in tank pump?

I would NOT advise adding better filtration without adding an in-tank lift pump! The CP3 struggles at best just to get fuel through the OEM setup using the long vacuum run that it came with from the factory...
Pulling fuel that far through filters and hoses, and fittings exposes many opportunities for air inleakage and air infusion into the diesel fuel!
Adding a much better primary water separator/filter with better micron numbers and a high efficient secondary fuel filter would add even more restriction without a lift pump...

Thanks. That's the exact reason I asked the question. The in tank pump would be able to push fuel where ever it needs to go.

Yes you need an additional pump. For a couple of days I tried it without while waiting for a Kennedy lift and I had to pump pressure about half the time I cut engine off. As long as it was running it did fine. No similar problem after adding lift pump but it does not have to be the in tank pump. The CRD never had the issue until auxiliary filter added and waiting for the lift pump delivery.

The in-tank lift pump is one of the cleanest and easiest install and probably one of the least expensive options available...
Once properly installed, it looks and operates as a factory OEM pump!
It also eliminates all concerns of any fittings leaking air into the system anywhere! Any other type of lift pump installed outside the tank cannot provide the same assurances....

Completed adding a 2 micron secondary fuel filter between the OEM fuel filter/water separator. Now have a true duel filter setup! OEM filter still in place and second 2 micron in place to catch anything the Mopar filter misses!
The OEM filter is grossly inadequate, ~30 micron @ 98% efficiency in 2/5/15 micron particle size, at best and will not protect the injectors from harmful particles including emulsified water in fuel.

Built a bracket and located the additional filter in front of the OEM filter. Also added a small gauge to monitor the outlet fuel pressure leaving the new second filter feeding the injection pump.
Note: I do have the in-tank fuel pump setup...
Many thanks to Ranger1 for his great guidance and information on this project!
If anyone wants the bracket drawings, let me know and I will post or send them to you.

Napa 4770 - Wix 24770, Hydraulic Filter Adapter Base
Napa 3528 - Wix 33528, H-D Fuel Filter

So what is the little filter on the side that appears in the last picture?

Do you have three filters in all? The original, the 33528, and the small one?

Do you have a piping diagram ?

The small filter behind the large filter is a Donaldson 550588 11 micron filter, it is the primary filter/water separator that is screwed onto the OEM filter head.
the little small blue looking bowl below the primary filter is a clear bowl water separator by Donaldson PN: 569758, that screws onto the bottom of the filter using the WiF threads. Then the WIF screws into the bottom of the clear bowl. See picture.
It did require going to a Racor 1/2"-20 UNF WIF Sensor PN: RK 30964.
Secondary Fuel Filter is a Donaldson P551313

Did not have a piping diag., so I drew one!

Excellent...Thanks very much. I now have all the data and pictures to do this myself.
I just ordered the Carter Lift Pump and Harness from Sausquatch today so will install that first and get it working. Once that is done I will buy the parts for the filter mod you have created and install it.

I appreciate all your contributions to the board. I follow your posts and you are clearly an accomplished mechanic and it is great you are willing to share with those of us on this board.

I like the CRD Libby but it is clearly not for the faint of heart to own. I am sorely tempted to buy a second and get it in shape as I do believe that these engines will go a long time. The prices for used ones seem to be undervalued I guess because they are such a unique beast to maintain.

Thanks again.

Only if certain things $$ are done to them to make them have a longer longevity.
As to undervalued; if people knew what the price of some of the hard to get engine parts cost, I believe you could buy them even cheaper? :ROTFL:

Ahhh...so no new hose necessary? Just the reducer/adapters you mention? Again...existing hose has enough length for this application?

If you want to use the AN fittings and braided hoses, Jegs or Summit Racing both have them!

http://www.jegs.com/
https://www.summitracing.com/

As to brass fittings; most any good hardware store like ACE or one of the builders stores like Lowes or Home Depot will have 1/2 NPT to 3/8 hose barb fittings that will fit the Wix/NAPA filter head.
And yes, the OEM feed hose to the CP3 will work just fine if you want to reuse it.

I just opted to go with all new hoses and fittings for peace of mind... :D

Question: You have the Donaldson P550588 in place of the OE filter. You added the Racor WIF, etc. The WIX fuel filter and the P550588 have the same level of filtration of 10-11 microns. Also, the OE setup has a WIF or at least mine does. What was your reasoning to change the OE filter and WIF sensor for a smaller Donaldson primary and a new WIF?

The Donaldson P550588 allowed me to add the additional clear water bowl on the bottom of the filter and the Donaldson is a true filter/water separator. And yes I did have to go the the standard 1/2 WIF sensor which I chose the Racor but there are others. It only required a quick rewire to swap out.
Also, the Donaldson is a 11 micron filter @ 99% efficiency rating!
I have read numbers as high as 20 microns on the OEM filter.
Not sure what the Wix or NAPA filters are rated....
I do not believe there is much difference in size between the Donaldson and the OEM filter, they are very close and there was enough room below the filter for the clear bowl and different WIF sensor!

Installed my Carter liftpump and now installed the two Donaldson filters. The primary has the new Racor WIF and is a 10 micron filter with water separator. The secondary is the 2 micron filter.

I made the mounting bracket out of 3/16" stock as per your drawing. All went very smoothly.

I could not have done this without the example, drawings, and explanations of WWDiesel..
