Any concern of extra fuel system restriction by adding the secondary filter without having an electric in tank pump?

I would NOT advise adding better filtration without adding an in-tank lift pump! The CP3 struggles at best just to get fuel through the OEM setup using the long vacuum run that it came with from the factory...
Pulling fuel that far through filters and hoses, and fittings exposes many opportunities for air inleakage and air infusion into the diesel fuel!
Adding a much better primary water separator/filter with better micron numbers and a high efficient secondary fuel filter would add even more restriction without a lift pump...

Installed my Carter liftpump and now installed the two Donaldson filters. The primary has the new Racor WIF and is a 10 micron filter with water separator. The secondary is the 2 micron filter.

I made the mounting bracket out of 3/16" stock as per your drawing. All went very smoothly.

I could not have done this without the example, drawings, and explanations of WWDiesel..

Looks Good! Your CP3 and injectors will thank you for doing this!
And thanks for the kudo's, but I cannot take all the credit! Ranger1 informed me of this great mod early on right after I purchased my CRD! I liked it so much, I did the same mod to my Dodge Cummins....
Every diesel CRD should have a dual filter setup for pump and injector protection!

I am going to go with the Donaldson P551313 for a secondary filter.

It has 3 micron um rating after the revised ISO standard, SAE J1858. 99% Efficiency.

They run about $18 or $39 for a pack of 3.

Excellent choice!
You can also use the NAPA 3528 or the Cat 1R-0750 which are both excellent very low micron secondary filters with great ratings.

If you need a custom bracket to mount the secondary filter head on, pm me. I have them in stock available. :D

Mounted the bracket made by WWDiesel. it is very well made.
Waiting on the Donaldson filter.

Installed and working.

It was mentioned to me the teflon tape was a bad idea and will cause clogging problems. May change it out. Also was told to change out the galvanized elbows to brass, but not given a reason. I searched before buying those (and before using the teflon tape actually) and could not find any cautions against using galvanized with the fuel.

Looks Great! Good job, your CP3 and injectors will thank you for this mod not to mention adding additional longevity to those components.

A couple weeks ago I installed a secondary filtration setup in my CRD. I used the WIX head and the WIX filter on the WWDiesel custom bracket. Everything is working great! All went as has been noted in past posts, but I will add or reiterate the following from my experience.

I used permatex non-hardening sealant on all of the threaded fittings, being careful to apply none on the first two male threads - especially on the fittings downstream of the secondary filter.
I installed a Facet 40109 under hood with a NAPA 3270 inline prefilter. I mounted the pump directly to the side of the battery using 3M dual lock (think heavy duty Velcro) and wired it to the proper spot on the relay.
I did use the hand pump to initially bleed the air from the system. After the initial manual bleed, I switched over to using the electric pump to bleed air from both the primary and secondary filter heads.
I really thought about using some aluminum stock I had to build a bracket for the head. I ended up using the WWDiesel custom bracket, and I'm glad I did. Nice clean install, and it put things right where they needed to be. No fuss.
Thanks to all previous posters for making this mod go so smoothly!

iakj11, install looks great! Not a big fan of inline pumps since they can still suck air and ingest it into the fuel system from any leak points on suction side plumbing. Like intank pumps better since it puts the entire system under pressure all the way to the CP3. But if it works out OK and you don't have any air in fuel problems, your good to go.

Just shipped out a complete secondary filter kit with bracket today to WA state.

Thanks! No problems with air in fuel before, and so far so good!
