Problem:
Found both my lower ball joint dust cover/boots busted due to age!
Both ball joints still in excellent condition, tight with no discernible play. Could not warrant replacing ball joints just for bad boots!

Solution:
I made 2 home made dust cover/boots out of some rubber hose I had on hand.
Removed old boot parts, cleaned up ball joints real good and greased them up.
Installed new home made dust cover/boots packed with grease....

As found with busted boots:

Cleaned and greased up:

New homemade dust cover/boot:

New dust cover/boot installed:

That's one way to use up your old radiator hoses!

How long do you figure it'll last?
Anyone want to start a pool sheet?

Plenty of Universal ball joint dust boots available online from retailers like this one: > http://www.suspension.com/universal-dust-boots.asp
Radiator hose is much thicker with cord reinforcement as opposed to thin OEM boots so hopefully they will last for a little while.
If and when they do break, I will have universal replacements on hand ready to install!

X2... I always gravitate to heavier and beefier than O.E. specifications if possible, so perhaps your radiator hose mock-up will actually end up being better than a normal boot. I am a little concerned about how the hose will stand up to being constantly in contact with that grease, so please keep us posted about how it is holding up.

No parts retailer in this town can even order a replacement boot (I checked), all they can do is sell you a new ball joint!
Time will tell on the homemade cover...

How have these held up? Might even consider putting some over the original boots to see if they last longer.

I check them every time I have the Jeep on the rack to change oil and so far they are holding up just fine.
The rubber is much thicker than OEM so they should hold up for a long time as long as they don't split.
Their main purpose is to keep grit out of the BJ.
If I ever have to replace the ball joints, I want some with grease fittings.
