A nice drawing below that I modified laying out all the EPA required junk on modern diesel engines. Way to much crap to go wrong! :banghead:

EPA Diesel Fuel requirements is another piece of the requirements. wrote:

After 2010, EPA required:
All highway diesel fuel supplied to the market be ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel); and
All highway diesel vehicles must use ULSD.
After 2014, EPA required:
All nonroad, locomotive, and marine (NRLM) diesel fuel must be ULSD; and.
All NRLM engines and equipment are required to use ULSD fuel (exceptions for older locomotive and marine engines).

Looks good but just a heads up the components on the exhaust system change in order depending on vehicle like on most domestic it goes cat then scr then dpf, the euros almost all follow the order laid out

The USA EPA requirements do go a bit overboard but at least they are trying to make this a cleaner Planet!

Here in South Africa there are no Roadworthy checks required at all until a new Buyer needs to put the vehicle in his own name!

My 2002 2.5 Export Diesel I bought new in May 2002....I do look after it and would take action if it started to below smoke or if the brakes or tires were in bad shape but some of the vehicles on the road here belch out smoke, have worn out tires and are held together with fencing wire....no problem until someone wants to buy it! :shock:

So I personally would like to see more stringent Roadworthy and Emissions controls to be applied but this is Africa and things work differently here!

No you don’t billy bob, trust me. That’s crazy talk. That’s why we drive these “older” diesels.

Some of the latest diesels are also running a low pressure EGR which comes out of the exhaust after the DPF, which means no soot. The new 3.0 Duramax and I believe the 3rd Gen EcoD have this.

It must go in before the turbo.

The EPA does not mandate (require) any of that hardware on diesel vehicles. EPA sets the tailpipe emission limits for a several emission test cycles and manufacturers need to meet them. OEMs can employ any technology they desire to make this happen. The graph misses a few items some OEMs use and includes items not used by most OEMs. The HC doser is only employed by GM. Low pressure egr is new in the last 5 years or so, this one adds a throttle valve in the exhaust pipe.
