Another Performance Module question
One of these is on my ‘To buy’ list – I’m just not sure which one yet.
I think it’s a given that they do increase performance – and the theory is that if you don’t use all the performance – they can give you better mileage.

However I’ve noticed several of the folks that gotten them taken them off – or swapped them out – so my question is – if you have or had one of these –

What kind of problems did you have?
Would you buy the same one again?
Did you ever get better mileage?

Name.............................................Cost WebSite Notes
Digi Tuner....................................$619.95 upscaleauto. 16 levels TUV certified fuel injector pulse width (does not increase fuel pressure)
VAD Smartbox..............................$542.50 dominatordiesel 3 levels 25hp 37t pulse width no pressure changes
Striker 1.......................................$418.00 jeepinbyal 10 levels 100hp(PSD, Cummins)
BD Power.....................................$413.25 xtremediesel 20hp 30t increases supply pressure
Painless (Same as Striker).............$409.00 jegs/summit 10 levels
Edge Trail Jammer.........................$399.00 xtremediesel 3 levels 25hp 40t timing boost pressure fueling
Dr Performance Predator Module....$390.00 grimmperformance 45hp /95T optimize fuel plume -timing duration =lower EGT??
TS Performance.............................$385.00 xtremediesel 8 programs (upgradeable) Does not exceed 26,000 psi fuel pressure
Inmotion.......................................$350.00 inmotionusa ($300 ebay) 35hp 45T remap ECU (takeout send to Calif)
Striker 2........................................$315.00 jeepinbyal 5 levels 65hp
Scorpion Stinger............................$270.00 dominatordiesel 3 levels 65hp
TDC Technologies PowerBox...........$229.00 ebay infinitely adjustable 25%hp 30% t modifys injector timing

(Prices were accurate ~6 Nov)

My big concern was about fuel rail pressure – several say they don’t modify pressure only pulse width or timing. BD specifically said they do increase pressure. TS performance was specific they do not go above 26,000psi and Bosch said anything below 29 was fine.
Only DigiTuner that states they’re TUV certified
There very little real data on the websites. It appears you can modify timing by plugging into the pressure rail.

If i were you I would go Inmotion talk to them and they will go normal or specific for you. I paid 315.00 with a lostforum key word on the qpon level. I paid 24.00 for the xpress mail and they send it to me next day xpress mail. To have performace also you should replaced Torque Converter, oil Pump,Shifters and filters the rest is drive, drive and drive without a issue in the trans.

I bought a used Edge Trailjammer unit off Ebay for $225. I went with the chip instead of Inmotion because of concerns about passing emissions inspections in the future (I can unplug the chip, I'd have to take my ECU back to Inmotion for a reprogram). Plus the price was right.

Took all of 20 minutes to install (well, 5 to install the unit, 15 to get the wiring through the plug in the fire wall and into the cab).

Has three settings (normal, fuel economy, power). Fuel economy is supposed to be a slight bump up in HP and torque (like 10 and 15, or so). Power is much higher (like 20 and 40), but the instructions include a warning about exhaust gas temps and not using this setting under a load unless you have gauges to monitor its effects. I've kept it on the fuel economy mode.

Have had it for about one tank of diesel thus far. Results are hard to quantify... pick up seems improved, and mileage seems up slightly (from 20 mpg in city driving to 21... my only highway experience has been w/ the kayak on the roof, and my old mpg was around 24.5-25 on average, new mpg 25.5-26 (all according to EVIC). Certainly not hard scientific data, so take it for what it is worth.

Don't do the Resistor that comes with the Transgo shift kit. Unless you like random hard shifts and poor timing. However some of the time the shifts were wicked fast. But the slams that prevailed are not worth it!

There are actually 3 things I things I think are significant prior to effectively using a performance module
1) trans needs to be fixed - already done (added resistor/subtracted resistor - works better without)
2) Fuel system needs to be fixed (in tank lift pump planned - awaiting Loco's response on whether I buy new/used)
3) EGT gauge - more of an issue towing - I'm not doing that yet but it's planned for the future

The concern I have is that the advertisers have virtually no data - so I'm asking for experience.
Dr Performance has been mentioned favorably in a couple of posts/threads, as have Painless/Stryker, Edge and Digituner
however some people have changed or pulled a module - I think that's probably the most important data - Why?

as for Inmotion - I like their advertisements - sounds good - however
1) no data as to what they actually change.
2) have to pull module and send to California
3) 1 level only

DrPerformance, TSperformance, VAD, Digituner - all they say they don't affect pressure only timing.
(Suncoast specifically mentions TS performance in their Torque converter listing)
only BD power specifically says they increase pressure.

been looking on ebay for a used one. I just don't feel comfortable with the trans to use it a lot. Maybe just to drag race the Japanese vehicles in cavaliers, but most of the time I don't need a chip for that
