Biocrow,
I have had a vent thermometer in my dash vent for a few months now. Never gets below 40 degrees. This is on the high side of the "OK" area.

So today I had a cross state drive and expected to spike over 30 MPG. I hadn't counted on the 30>40 MPH head wind. So what did this have to do with the AC. Well it wasn't so hot and I wanted some fresh air in the cab. Funny part was that today I had to turn the recirculate back on. Why? Well this time I was too cold! The wind was blowing so hard that with the fresh setting it was like having the blower on 3 when it was really on 1. I could only solve the problem by going back to recirculate.  :?

My worst mileage came from an interstate trip with that kind of head wind. I only average 16mpg over 650 miles. I've been as high as 25mpg in local driving around town.

I was disappointed because of the wind. I was shooting to bust 30 MPG and I only made it to about 27.2 on the EVIC thanks to the wind. Still, that works out to about 28.7 when I adjust for my 6% odometer error.

On that last point, I don't have GPS but this time I calculated it against mile markers for a 200 mile stretch. The error was exactly 6% low with miles driven 200, and miles on the trip at 188. I checked it at 10 mile intervals through 50 miles then at 100 and at 200 and it was always consistant. I am bone stock and was running 40 PSI in the tires.

I was also hoping to fill up on B99 in Issaquah but the Grange was closed so I stuck with the dino I could find. I had left Spokane with a 1/2 tank of fuel, something never done before! I drove 80 miles after the fuel needle hit E and the light came on. Previous experience has shown that I have about 3.5 gals left when the system says empty.

my previous experience as a pilot and now with my CRD is that fuel gauges are worthless. while I would choose running of of fuel in the CRD over while flying, the whole idea of pumping it back just sucks so I'll leave it to others like you to test how far they can get on E :D

   OK so this is the embarassing part of te story that I left out.

After I found the Grange closed and found out that no motel close had a room. Knowing that I wanted to fill up on bio diesel, I kept putting in a gallon or two and driving farther. On I-5 just north of Olympia the CRD started sputtering. I shifted to N and coasted to the next exit which happened to have a Shell station with overpriced diesel. I whipped in, coughing and sputtering, shut her down and then pumped 2 Gals.

..........................    It wouldn't re-start!   Once it did then died.

I flipped the hood, pumped the prime about 10 time, hit the key and viola IGNITION!

When I got back on the road it was still coughing a little so I blew out the soot down 99 about a mile until I got to a reasonable station and then loaded her to the gills on dino. 19.75 gals! Let's see, a mile or so earlier I had put in 2 gals. So that is about 21.75 gals and of course there was a thimble or two left in the tank that was useable if I had been tipped the right direction.

I don't know what it would have been like had I run completely dry and will never know!!!!! I was very pleased at 9PM in a strange town and with no tools that I was not hanging over the fender bleeding injectors though. It started much more easily than I would have expected.

I would have guessed that the air bleed valve would have required to have been opened a few turns............just as if the fuel filter was changed, if it was ran completely out ?

I think I would crack the bleeder on the filter head and purge the air at the first opportunity. They will run with a lot of air in there, but it can't be a good way to go. Has anybody out there bled injectors on one of these yet? I've bled many in the past, but the pressures in this system would have me thinking twice. That kind of pressure will either cut you deep or inject fuel so deep it would be bad.

Should self purge small amounts, my 240D would and so would the VW TDI diesel. Remember I said small amount, not meanng a whole fuel line from the tank.

I would have thought it would self purge also, but the first time I purged mine it took 25 to 30 strokes before I saw fuel. This was with 6k on the clock, and it had never even been close to running out. Go figure. Makes me wonder about a small suction side leak.

That does sound like an air leak to me.

If one is changing a fuel filter and fills the filter and has clamped off the fuel hose, what little air in the system then should self purge. But if you have run out of fuel and crank till it runs then you have been running a Injection Pump dry and that is real hard on IP's for sure, no fuel for cooling or lubrication of the pump.
