 Post subject: Newbie here. After EHM, anything else to do?

Hello to all. Just took delivery of our new Inferno Red CRD. Hasn't broke yet with a whole 175 miles on it! It will be the wife's daily driver...I will try to steal it once in a while for a spin.

I want to thank all the members for sharing their knowledge of these things...with special thanks to oldnavy, DW, and cohorts on their work on the CCV replacement. Until it's in production, I see how the EHM mod will keep the air intake tract clean (although I would never, ever, Ever, alter the emissions equipment! :wink: ) Going to the hardware store shortly.

Is there anything else that should be changed/modded immediately? I saw a post about the muffler, as if there was a problem, but a search did not turn up anything. Is there an issue with the muffler? Anything else?

The original mufler is no problem. People have just received a little better performance and turbo spool up along with a little more rumble from either a FlowMaster 40 or a glasspack. Both used with the original exhaust piping.

General advice here (I was a newbie 3 months ago) is to:

EHM
Change your oil after a few 100 mi. to a 5W/40 synthetic like Shell Rotella T
Keep your OEM tires at around 40 lbs. for best mileage
Keep an eye on your air filter (changed mine @ 4000 mi. to a Wix: HUGE difference)
Get a straight through muffler (magnaflow, flowmaster, aerodyne, glasspack)
Don't let the tank get below 1/4
Feed it a little biodiesel occasionally to keep it quiet and clean

I think that summarizes the advice I've gleaned. Oh, and read the L.O.S.T. KJ forum regularly :D

Mine has a BD in April 06 and no problems so far (7000 mi.). You may have a late enough model that Chrysler fixed
most of the big problems before you had to deal with 'em.

So, you must have picked up the one at Steve Christies Jeep. I was gawking that one over awhile ago, but picked one up at Jim Click Jeep.
You can pick up BioDiesel from Arizona Petroleum on cherry off 22nd. They sell B20 and B99.
I've been getting water in the airbox during the monsoon downpours. This only happens when driving through the rain, and not when going through water or flooded streets. I enlarged the drain holes in my airbox for now, and there is a thread for other possible solutions. I was definately getting the wet filter before the drain holes were enlarged.
It appears you already know about the elephant hose mod.
I installed a DynoMax muffler picked up at Don's Hotrod, and that was one of the best things for the CRD so far.

I only noticed one drain hole, center bottom of the box. Where are the others? How much did you enlarge it/them? I'm in the White Mountains and driving through monsoon rain regularly.

You must be speaking of the dark blue one they had...I wanted a light Khaki one, but ended up w/Inferno Red because it had the options I wanted. I did buy it thru Christie, but they got it from Power Chrysler/Jeep in Scottsdale (dealer trade). Tried to deal on one with Click, but got a better deal on my trade with Christie (and they're closer to home, too!).

Looked at all the oil choices at Auto Zone, and found only Mobile 1 to meet the SM/CF specification in the recommended weights of 0W/40 or 5W/40. I did not see a synthetic Shell Rotella T; only the dino version but it was only SL/CF (I think...but anyway, it did not meet SM/CF). Where do you get synthetic Rotella?


Dude, CF is an old spec for two-stroke/off-road diesels. Follow the weight ratings, but get a synthetic with CI-4 / CI-4+ API ratings. CI-4 and above are the ratings developed for modern diesels like we have in the CRD (direct injection, EGR, closed CCV).

Try Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply Company, for Rotella 5W40. Some NAPA stores also carry Amsoil now as well.

A/C you might have to try 2 or 3 walmarts. Thats what I had to do.

I think there were three that were approximately 1/4 inch in diameter in the bottom of the air box. There is a waffle pattern down there, that will stop all the water from getting out, so I drilled a hole in the center of each square of the waffle in the very bottom of the box. It may let in hot engine temp air, but it sure is draining out the water and I'm not getting the wet air filter anymore. I drilled them to be 3/8 of an inch.

I think it is funny, alot of people don't realize how much rain we get in the desert when it decides to rain. Good luck.

I bought at the end of May, and they had one there then (fully loaded with everything), so I assumed it was the same one. It is really funny that your experiance is the exact opposite of mine regarding trade-in car valuation. I simply told Click how much I would pay with my trade-in, and they scrambled numbers until they could hit the price. Glad to hear they helped you out.
