As I posted in the other forum, some guys will tell you these are INCORRECT filters for the CRD and they won't work properly for it. I'm using them with no trouble, but they will insist you must use Mopar filters. Just a heads up in case they come in and flame you too.

I went to the WIX website and verified that there are different part numbers for the 3.7 and CRD. I haven't approached my dealer yet with providing the oil filter when I take it in for free oil changes (yes they promised free oil changes for 100k every 6k before they knew it took synthetic oil) .

Also the local autoparts store that carries the WIX filters said the oil filter is kept in stock since it is spec'ed for many 80's and 90's Ford gas engines. I found that to be interesting.

Other posts mentioned they would not do warranty if K&N air filters are used. Seems to me thats against the law to refuse warranty for using after market parts. Wonder if anyone let K&N know about this. They may make some noise with DC.

Yeah. The Wix oil filter you listed is the exact same filter as the NAPA Gold 1516 oil filter. NAPA is selling the same filter for 3.7L V6s. So I posted that the same oil filter will fit the V6 and CRD, and then some people came in and flamed me saying that was not correct and I should not be using the #1516 filter (which is the one you listed with a different badge slapped on it). So I just thought I'd give you the heads up.

I'm glad we can get these filters for less than the Mopar stuff. Dealer was going to get almost $100 to do an oil/air filter change on my CRD. I said I don't think so!

Some posts suggested some dealers were trying to force you to use Mopar filters. I asked mine if they had a problem with me providing the filter for the free oil changes (free oil , pay for filter and they are ok with bringing in after market. I am glad I don't have to fight them on this.

Other than the apparent lower cost, what are the advantages of the Wix filter?
Since the dealer is paying for the free Mobil 1 oil, wouldn't it be more ethical to buy the filter from them?

Not really because the dealer has an alterior motive behind "free oil changes", they use them as an oportunity to sell you more services that you might get done elswhere.. plus you usually don't use ethical and car dealer in the same sentence.

An example of this is one other Jeep I had the dealer (different dealer than currently) offered free oil changes time to time then would try to tell you your shocks were bad, or you needed this or that.. One time they had to the nerve to tell the steering stabilizer was bad because of some oil on it but when the same oil was pointed out under warranty they said "they all do that it's not bad'.

As I was typing this my wife called and they won't let me use my own filter after telling me they would again ..ethical and car dealer don't get used in the same sentence.

i use the napa filter on my crd and it works great. the part number was 1516 gold. looks just just like the oem filter and made by wix. if you like buying online check out filter1. my dad buys all his filters from them (fuel, air, oil). i'm going to be looking at an order from the crd and golf tdi very soon. product is always on time and never damaged :D

I checked the Wix website last night. I entered in just the info for '05 Liberty Sport, and it called up the info for all 3 engines. For the CRD and the V6, it listed the same part number for both the oil and air filter.

And yes, for the oil filter, it listed Ford/Mercury cars from '81 til now for applications. Apparently, this is a standard size filter they've already made for gas cars for at least a couple of decades. If you go to the AC Delco site, the number of apps for this filter are too numerous to mention, many OEM's and different gas engines.

This really isn't a diesel engine filter, it's just a gas engine filter that was convenient for them to use.

If you want a real quality diesel engine filter, find a Cummins or other heavy diesel engine service center in your area and ask about getting a Fleetguard oil filter. A friend I have has an '04 Dodge Cummins and always uses Fleetguard filters. When he pulled out his dipstick and showed me the oil on it, it still looked new with over 4000 miles since he had last changed it. they're around 7 bucks each, but worth it.

The wix part number crossed over to a Fleetguard part number, LF3339. this is the Fleetguard version of the same size filter, they didn't list anything available when i typed in the vehicle info for a CRD. However, given what I've seen of how their filters perform, it's probably still a far sight better than the generic gas engine filter everyone else is selling.

I found several other filters by other companies by using the V6 info instead of the CRD. Amsoil SDF34, AC Delco PFL400A, Purolator L20195, Fram 3600, Pennzoil PZ19.

Wow, that is cheap. The lowest price I had found for the oil filter was $4.31 from RockAuto, $10.54 for the air filter, and they don't offer free shipping AFAIK.

As far as the Mopar filters, last word I heard was that Mopar had switched to getting their filters manufactured by Fram. :( Every place I've checked online that has done a filter comparison basically says that Fram's are overpriced junk, the filter element is glued together.

The ones i saw that were consistently recommended, at least as far as available at a local auto store, were Wix/NAPA Gold, Hastings Lifeguard, Purolator Pure One, and Mobil 1, not necessairly in that order. Personally, I'm still going to try and get a Cummins fleetguard, but then I'm prejudiced because i work for Freightliner. :wink:

One website, www.allpar.com, pulled their recommendation for Mopar filters after they found out they'd switched manufacturers to Fram.

Well the Mopar filter for the CRD say "made in Itaily" on the side so I doubt if its a Fram :?

How are you getting free oil changes without free filters? I got this same deal from the dealer. It includes a coupon book for the oil change AND the filter. No hassles at all. Free oil changes without filters is just down right silly. Why would you even agree to that?

That's good news, unless of course Fram has an Italian subsidiary! :?

In all seriousness though, I sincerely hope that DC has equipped our CRD's with an honest-to-god made-for-diesel oil filter, and that any Fram clones they're stocking are for the domestic gas engines, not that I'd wish a Fram filter on anyone.

It would be interesting though, if we could go to a local dealer parts dept, and compare the p/n's for the Mopar oil filters for a CRD and a V6. If it's the same p/n for both, I'd begin to wonder what was up. Better yet, if you could get one of each and compare them side by side. If they're different p/n's, the CRD stamped "made in Italy" and the V6 stamped "made in USA/China/etc", and it's just that they share a common case size and thread pattern, it'd go a long way to putting my mind at ease.

Personally, I'm still going to give the Cummins Fleetguard a try. After seeing how clean the oil was in my friend's 5.9 L Cummins after 4000 miles, i figure he just might be on to something. I've worked at the Freightliner plant in Cleveland NC for over 8 years, and this is the same type filter they use on the semi's, both for oil and coolant. Using API diesel-rated oil and these type filters they can rack up well over 300,000 miles on these trucks, just might be worth trying the same approach on a CRD.

Got ahold of the parts dept at the Cummins service center in Charlotte NC today. Ordered 3 filters, 18 bucks and change, shipped UPS should have then tomorrow. If anyone else in the area (NC/SC) is interested in trying them, I can post the phone number later.

Now the question is, Mobil 1 5W40 or Shell Rotella T 5W40?

There is a thread on jeepsunlimited.com where a guy(a mechanic I think) cut the CRD Mopar filter apart and noted that there was major differences between it and the V-6 filter.........I'll see if I can find it.


And I am using Rotella synthetic 5w-40 it more than meeps Mopars requirements and is around $13.00 a gallon ,I'm very happy with it.

Thanks, I'd be interested in reading that. It just made me nervous when I saw Wix listing the same filter for gas AND diesel, the possibility that some filter companies might start listing a gas engine filter for the CRD just because it would fit. There are different operating conditions and chemistry going on inside a diesel (acids that could dissolve filter glues, soot that can plug filters, etc), that could overwhelm a filter not designed for the job and end up trashing the engine as a result.

I've checked the pdf files from Cat and Detroit Diesel reagrding the type of oil they require. For a 4 cycle direct injection diesel with a CCV (closed breather) system and EGR, running low sulfur diesel, they require the use of a CI-4 or Global DHD-1 rated oil (API rating on back of container). They also advise to get an oil with the highest possible TBN (total base number, for neutralizing acid formation) and lowest possible percent sulfated ash content.

Both the Shell Rotella T 5W40 and Mobil 1 5W40 Truck & SUV Diesel meet the API requirements, and have good ratings for both the TBN number and percent ash content. Mobil 1 just edges out Shell on the TBN and percent ash numbers, 12 and 1.35 versus 11.5 and 1.47 respectively. Cummins rep said that as long as percent ash is below 1.8 that's acceptable.

As far as oil that only has a CF rating (Mobil 1 0W40), the reps say that is strictly for 2 stroke off road aplications running high sulfur diesel, in other words bulldozer oil. CF oil doesn't have the extra lubrication needed for running low sulfur diesel (sulfur in the fuel actually helps lubricate the engine), and the higher volatility means more of the oil will evaporate off and you'll end up getting more oil vapor sucked up thru the CCV system and into the turbo, intercooler, and EGR components.

I do use the Mobil 1 5W40 oil for diesels because I do see some advantage there with this engine. At $5.18 per quart (Wal*Mart) it hurts REALLY bad, but I do use it.

However, I refuse to pay $12.50 for a **** oil filter from Mopar because it's "rated" for the diesel engine. After talking to a master mechanic with 30+ years of seniority, it's pretty obvious to me that an oil filter is a pretty simple device. It catches debris in the oil...period. So as long as it'll handle the pressure, and filter to the appropriate micron diameter, it'll do the job.

Wix lists the same filter for gas and diesel because the same filter works for gas and diesel on the vehicles they list it for. I am using that very filter on my CRD (sold as Napa Gold at Napa auto parts stores) and it's half the cost of the Mopar filter, doesn't leak like the Mopar filter, and filters just as well as the Mopar filter.
