I'm new to the group and new to 4X4ing and was wondering if there are any members in the Julian area of San Diego County?

Man you are right down the road from Los Coyotes. What a great place that was for wheeling! Shame the Indians shut it down to wheeling. I don't know of anyone in Juian, but there are a few lost souls in San Diego and around there. Welcome!

I'm just up the 15 in Corona, and about 1/2 way for you going to Big Bear.

I'm in Irvine, not that far from Julian but there really isn't much this way if you want to wheel, except maybe the part of Cleveland National Forest that's closeby (Santiago & Modjeska peaks).

The Main Divide road can be done in pretty much stock Liberty, no problem. There are some rocky sections near the top but that's about it. The views are rather nice. There is at least one 15-ft waterfall near El Cariso fire station.

If you're looking for more challenges on Main Divide, you'll have to take the side roads :)

I'm from San Diego but travel thru Julian to get out to the desert frequently.

I have lead a few trips into Anza Borrego:
To the 30 Million year old animal tracks.
To the petrified forest.
To the remote and “most scenic canyons of Anza Borrego”
To see the raptor nesting areas and see the long eared owls.
To see the desert flowers in bloom.

I don’t go looking look for the most advanced 4WD trails but my trips do rely on 4WD to get to remote locations. What are the capabilities your vehicle and what are your interests.

Sandiegodave,
My 05 Sport is mostly stock. I bought it used, so I've added all the skid plates (except the tank one) tow hooks in front and a hitch in the rear. The tires are the original 225/75X16 Goodyear Wranglers. Since they have a LOT of tread on them, and I just invested $200 for chains, I'm not too anxious to change out the tires right now. I guess this limits my off-road capability somewhat.

The main reason I bought this vehicle is because of the storm we had here last March. Two feet of snow was too much for my wifes AWD Pacifica and WAY too much for my PT Cruiser. Running a B&B and having guests trapped in our parking lot, unable to get the 250' driveway cleared and them trapped, was something I don't want to go through again. So I got a vehicle that was more snow capable and capable of pulling people out of snow banks or ditches on our windy road. Of course now, it will never snow here like that again :)

I've been off-roading with a friend in his CJ5, many years ago, and thought it was fun. Now that I've got a vehicle that's capable, I'd like to do some LITE off-roading (Class 1 and 2 trails), mostly to get to GeoCaches, which I also do as a hobby. I want to be environmentally friendly, and stick to established trails, saving as much of the environment as possible.

I hate to say this in a 4WD club but my interests are nature and natural beauty and not finding the most extreme trails. Most of the trails I go on are tame (Class 1-3) because I’m not looking for damage to my Liberty. Also a lot of the trails I do solo so I’m not looking to get into a trail that might trap me. I’m always interested in finding people that would like to join my wilderness adventures and I have heard so much about GeoCaches that I would like to follow you on one of your adventures. I don’t always stay in touch with this board so I’ll send you my cell number in a PM if you are interested in getting in touch with me.

Dave,
I'd love to have you tag along on a GeoCache Trip. There are literally 1000's of them in the Anza/Borrego/Julian area, most requiring some off road and hiking. I too enjoy nature, nature photography is what got me into astronomy, another hobby. Too many hobbies, too many toys, not enough money to support all of them

Send me your number and I'll give you a call when we can set something up. BTW, is that your Libby in your avatar? Looks like a precarious situation?

The petrified forest is one I'd like to see :) Would you have some time this year to show some members of the LOST west gang around?

Last year the petrified forest wash was flooded but I thought I'd go looking for what is left. I'd love to lead another desert trip but first I need to prerun the area to make sure the entire forest has not been covered with mud. I'll let you know when my next trip is.

Yes the photo is my Liberty in Moab.
If you have not been there go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOST goes there every year and I would not feel safe on some of the trails unless our club with their vast experience was with me.
