trailer wireing

put a rear hitch on the liberty, when I went to a local trailer shop to get the wireing harness they told me I needed a $150 harness that wired straight to the battery because there were problems withe the wires in the jeep, they couldn't handle the load and there have been fires, this is the first I've heard of this, anyone else been told this or were they trying to rip me off because I got the hitch some place else?

I can't say for certain in your case, but my father-in-law works for a Chrysler dealership and I had him get me a tow package through the parts department..(I can get jeep stuff at cost), anyways, it came with the wiring attachment and he said for me to bring it by his work after I installed it and he would have one of the guys wire it up for like $20.00. There was no mention about any wiring problems. My father-in-law was concerned about us buying a Libby because of other problems that people have had with the motors but nothing to do with wiring. I would imagine you were being shafted. I'd get a second opinion.

A lot of people here are using aftermarket add on wiring harness and I've yet to hear of any fires. Tell the manager of that shop what his employees are up to and then go somewhere else to purchase one.

Depends on 4 wire or 7 wire connector. A 7 wire would have a 20-30 amp battary charging circut preferably straight from battery with a auto resetting braker.

Okay I have NEVER heard of a libby catching fire cause of faulty wiring and I work for a Mopar dealership. Keep this in mind if your libby DOESN'T have an overhead console you will need another harness that they sell. My dealership had probs at first with installing the hitch and lights not working because of the extra harness needed.

Ive never heard of the libbys having motor problems either, so idk what that is all about, the 3.7 is a very good engine i have heard?!?!

It's a DC, V-6. I haven't uncrossed my fingers yet....

I bought my wire harness for my 04 sport from etrailer.com. Cost me $34.00. Took me 5 minutes to install it. It connects to the break lights. Unscrew both your break light cover and connect the wire harness to the break lights, then route the wire down to your hitch. (The kit comes with an adapter for your break lights.)

thats where I got mine from, put it on last night, the lights on the boat trailer work, if it burns I hope it burns good, allstate can buy me a new one :lol:

I installed an adapter that is inserted behind the passenger side rear, inside panel. It connected into the brake / tail light circuit and provided a 4 wire trailer connection.
The adapter had its own 10 gauge wire that had to be run up front to the +12 volts. At the same time I wired in a trailer brake controller so the final trailer hook-up is a 7 and 4 wire connector.
I carefully cut a hole in the plastic rear bumper facia and installed the trailer connector.
Now, with a couple adapters, I can connect to any trailer the Liberty is capable of pulling. So far, I have had great results.
Under the hood, on the passenger side, I made an aluminum adapter plate that bolts up to the original studs located on the inner fender. This plate houses all the fuses and circuit breakers for my Libertys' trailer brakes, trailer lighting, Front driving lights, fog lights, etc.

I put one on from 4wdhardware, It has the usual inline hookup with an additional little box to protect against power surges.......

.....the only trouble I had was popping a fuse cause I was working on the trailer's lights and crossed a wire somewhere..... :roll:

Got the etrailer.com harness too ... no complaints. Glad I didn't spend the $78 at the car parts store and more than $100 at the dealership.

I have never heard of libs burning up either...

Only problem I have had is that my brake lights have blown the fuse, I have factory tow pkg, and some dumb elictrical engineer decided to put the trailer lights and fogs on the same fuse?! Oh well, I carry extras now.

thanks, I'm happy no one has had any big problems, I will find out more next monday when we tow the boat to Alabama for the week, hope if it burns it don't take the boat with it :lol:

FWIW I have the $17 adapter that U-haul sells installed on mine, even has little LEDs on the connector to verify that you are getting the correct signals. Towed a trailer from PHX to ABQ last weekend with no problems.

I put one of these harnesses on my 2002 liberty, it was easy and a no brainer to hook up, but trailer turn signals have never work right, the left turn only blinks when the brake lights are lit. wierd. I do not have much auto wiring experience, but you would think a plug and play like this should work. I don't tow that much, but I would like to get it fixed.

any ideas?
