Rear Brakes GONE Before the FRONT ONES?????

Hi

Has anyone experienced their REAR Brakes going Before their Front Ones?

I am at about 27,000 and my rears are down to Metal.. Fronts still OK 3-5000 more pad..

WHY?

I have never had Rears go FIRST...

Called the Dealer... They said.. Brake Warrranty Expires at 12mo 12,000 miles..

I said I understand that BRAKES are consumable... However the REARS Should NOT GO FIRST... They agreed....

Dropping off Wed.. EGR, LBJ, Rear Brakes...

Was this on jeepforum.com? It is kinda strange that this should happen. I believe someone said it could be a proportioning(sp) valve. Ive heard of the rear calipers seizing up, but not both at the same time?

I had my KJ inspected about a month ago, and my rears are almost toast, and my fronts have probably close to a year left on them...still can't figure out why...also on mine the outside pads wore much faster than the inside pads...

I seem to remember that there was a TSB on calipers locking or sticking...that would explain the problem. Not sure about this one, but I swear I saw it somewhere.

My rear drums went on my 02 about 1-2k miles before my front discs and pads.

I bought my KJ w 30k on it. the rear brakes looked liked records i had them replace for free before i would buy, never mind it would not have past the first inspection here in Mass.. They had to fix them no matter what.. Replaced the front discs/pads at 58k, did them myself..

I thought maybe I had a screwy Jeep. At my last oil change, they gave me a free safety check and told me basically the same thing. The rear brakes would need to be replaced by the next oil change but the front still had about 75% pad left. I have just a little over 30k miles. My wife mostly drives the Liberty and told me about a week ago that she heard a squeal from the rear when she was stopping. So I guess I'll be getting the rears done by the next oil change after all.

I just got word from the dealership about rear brakes...they are doing the 49,000 km service (about 30,000 miles) and they told me the rear brakes need to be replaced. The fronts are fine. Go figure. That seems like a VERY short lifespan for brakes IMHO.

I just replaced my brakes at 38,000 miles. My rears were almost down to the backing plate. The fronts had about 20% of the pad material left. I hate having to work on the truck in the winter, and I wasn't sure if they'd make it through or not. So I went ahead and did the fronts as well.

I also did 2 other brake jobs last week for my girlfriend and her sister (Aztec and a Trailblazer). On both vehicles the rears were just as worn out at the fronts.

I suspect that newer vehicle do more of the stopping work with the rear brakes than older vehicles. I also suspect that the engineers now design the rear brakes to have similar wear life as the front.

Brakes worn out at 27,000-30,000, DANG I have 66,700 on mine and brakes all around are still in great condition! Just checked them last night when I rotated my tires. Of course I never stop for anything, let off the throttle, lock it in and go around! :lol:

Remember also that the traction control uses the rear brakes to regulate wheels spin. So if you spend a lot of time off road or in slippery conditions, the rears will definetely go before the fronts.
