This was to be our first patrol and clean up of our trail. The meeting place was the McDonald's at Highways I 15 and SH 138, and showing up were:

John, Chris, and Sean Mathys
George and Teresa Pickavet
Wally Crandall
Kathy and Darin Huska
Ronald and Jennelle Peel
Scott Williamson
John and Caroline Lillibridge
Mark Burcham
Ted Kalil

A total of 15 people and 9 vehicles - a great turnout! Burchie and Annette had arranged for special purple T shirts for us with yellow Adopt A Trail KJ West Team on the front and Trail Crew 2N33 on the back, along with a great graphic of a mountain scene. I also had some Adopt A Trail hats to pass out, and at lunch some Adopt A Trail ash grey T shirts.

We proceeded to the trail entrance by Cedar Springs Dam and started down 2N33 at the junction with 2N17X. It wasn't long before we were finding bits of trash, but soon we came on one of the major dump sites we had seen previously when we ran the trail for a look-see. All kinds of personal stuff including used diapers, an old mattress, childrens' toys, papers, and the like. However, in the papers we found some that indicated who the trash may have belonged. I'll be working on that.

As trash bags became full, they were loaded into my Ford F350 4wd truck that was pulling another Ford pickup box trailer. Tires, tires, tires. These were mostly loaded into the trailer and other trash was stuffed in as room allowed.

After picking up where more miscellaneous trash was dumped down from the trail, we came on the second major dump site. By now, both the pickup and trailer were pretty full with all we had picked up, but we decided to gather the rest up and bag it. What we couldn't take, we'd come back for. Wth the help of John and Caroline and the Mathys family taking several bags on their roofs, though, we were able to get all the remaining trash taken out, except a recliner and two cement things.

We then had lunch at the site since shade was available. Following that, there really wasn't any way we could do much more for this run, and we all headed out, some for home and me for the dump in Victorville. As we got back to the dam parking area, a State truck was doing some clean up of the lot and allowed John and Caroline to leave their bags with them, and they took JJ's as well. They weren't able to take all that I had, so with the Mathys' accompanying, we proceeded to the dump.

I was concerned that they wouldn't take the tires, but found they would at a price of $1 each. I paid the deposit and we went to the dump areas and unloaded everything. When we returned, we found the total weight was 680 pounds! The charge, though, was only $30 which included the tire surcharge. I had a meeting with Greg Hoffman, the ranger in charge of Adopt A Trails, and he agreed that we would try to get the program to reimburse for such expenses, but they're out of money right now; it's the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. Greg was really happy about our efforts on Saturday.

Although we only able to do a small portion of the trail, we were able to remove almost all of the trash we'd noted on the previous run. Next time, we'll try to get the rest, do a little brushing, and see what can be done about the illegal bypasses.

A GREAT JOB DONE BY YOUR CLUB IN ACTION!!! Many thanks to all participants. They worked hard and really took ownership of this trail, which seriously needed our help.

I'm sure glad you got the pics, Burchie, they pretty much tell the story. Great!

Well, they were de-composing but now they're picking up.

No need to trash yourself; others can do it better for you. :-)r
