Well, 8104 trouble free miles with great mpg and then POOF!!!

Rounding a corner, starts stuttering, feels like limp mode...then shuts down. While it is shutting down it sounds like someone is playing the snare drum for about 10-15 seconds until I come to a stop. I pull over and let it sit a minute and try to restart...nothing at first...then I get out and a huge cloud of white smoke and a burning smell. Looks like something went wrong with the cooling system...get back in and the thing warns LoCoolant. Tow service picks up for free and my extended warranty allows me 5 free rental days. Will know more this afternoon. Removed the EHM in two minutes...

I am going to make a WAG that it's a crack in the radiator somewhere.

BTW, how does the inside of your EHM look? Any oily residue? Mine has been bone dry now for a month and I'm wondering if my earlier oil was from engine break-in and overfilling with 7 quarts of oil instead of 6.4 quarts for my last 3 oil changes....

EHM had a nice thin coat the whole length of the hose...no real problem with dripping but definite residue...

Looks like I will test the EHM a bit longer term, say 10k miles or so. I just re-read your first post and think maybe my WAG is correct, but only as collateral damage. The stuttering and then shut down is what has me puzzled as you did not get a high temp warning first or a high temp gage reading(or did you?). Maybe water pump fragged and that was the last sound you heard, caused a pressure spike, blew a weak point out...

Hard to tell with these new computers controlling ALL aspects of everything. Maybe it's smart enough to force a shutdown upon early low coolant detection.....

No warning light...guage was right in the middle...driving just fine...then literally POOF...felt like Chris Angel was going to show up in the back seat holding a 7 of spades and finding the same card sitting on my engine bay.

And I though I had problems.... So, the white smoke, was it steam from under the hood or actually smoke from the exhaust? Hopefully you didn't have a head or liner fail.

Hmmmm....... WAG - cooling fluid flooded the transmission housing or trans-cooler went bye-bye as well.

Steam from under the hood is a much better sign than from the tailpipe. Most newer electronic diesels have automatic shutdowns to protect the engine against overheat damage from loosing coolant. Only speculative, they will probably find a simple plumbing failure. I would start with the plastic surge tank (splitting @ seam) and/or hoses & clamps.

Well the concensus is that the GlowPlug in #1 Cylinder broke off and dropped in the combustion chamber...that explains the "snare drum beat" I heard as it shut down. The thing is GlowPlugs usually break when overheated and there was no indication of that from the guages or idiot lights. They can't test the cooling systems because they can not get it running. The dealership is sending it to another dealership that has a mechanic that just got some diesel specific training.

Fix is probably going to be at least a short block...Does anyone know if the VM's have wet or dry cylinder linings?

I would never of guessed that glowplug failure. Talk about collateral damage  :!:

My '05 has the factory 7/70 powertrain and 7/70 diesel engine & diesel component warranty and I'm seriously considering trying to limit my driving to 10,000 miles a year to maximize that. Hard to do when I average 15-18k now...

This sounds like a worst case scenario, any idea on time out of service? I'm thinking 30 days minimum to get everything fixed and diagnosed several times for as yet undetermined damage...

They are putting a rush on it...famous last words...lol...but I have to say they have been very good so far...Bought it at BlueBonnet...Towed to Lone Star...Fixing at Mission...Heck, I think there is only one or two more Jeep places in town!

I think the GlowPlug broke...smashed around...caused a coolant system failure (since no smoke out the tailpipe)...and hopefully didn't lead to some sort of tranny problem thru contamination...

I am going to ask them to let me SEE FOR MYSELF the damage and the new short block...just to be sure I am not getting a "bandage job". I think I will also ask them (demand) that they extend my warranty to 100,000 miles. I am pretty sure the turbo itself was probably hit with pieces, ect. but I have to say the EGR was still fine.

Well ain't that odd. You undergo a catastrophic failure and the only part without collateral damage is the EGR. Go Figure.

Haha ha ha. Whadya know? Your whole car blows up, everything has to be replaced and the demon EGR stays in there to plague you sometime three months from now.

I think they should extend the warranty to 70k starting at the mileage that's on the odo when you get it back. That's a brand new motor, should be a brand new warranty.

Sorry about your hassles Darby.

Messed with too many diesel engines to feel comfortable with this diagnosis or their approach. Any diesel mechanic worth their salt can pressureize an intact cooling system to look for a leak point. Many would start by doing a leak test before tearing this beast down.

Just don't buy the broken glowplug as the cause of the problem. Most of the time, any foreign object rattling around inside the cylinder will crash/float valves. This is a full interference engine, did you loose the timing belt or related gearing/components? The water pump and injection pump are both driven off the timing belt.

Should also mention, I feel your pain. I had a few Detroits grenade on me over the years. Been through this drill before only without the warranty.

Hopefully they figure it out. If something like that happens, can we take the engine to a Detrioit Diesel shop under waranty? I would feel a whole lot better about that than the stealer looking at it. I remember the old Mercedes SL we had-- dealer charged a fortune and could not get it to run worth a crap. Took the thing into a diesel shop down town that usually works on trucks and they fixed the fuel injection system. Ran great ever since.

I am worrying about when I bring this thing in for something like that....
