What kind is he, couldnt tell for sure from the pic but is that a ridge I see going down his back?

Cute dog OzLtd! I believe that's a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

My friend in Chicago rescues Ridgebacks! They are GREAT dogs!

BTW - My friend's name is Curtis. Ha!
