2002 Battery

Was wondering how many people have replaced there Battery
My neg battery post came out of the battery. I had that crud that gets on the post . when I started to clean it ,it just came out .I had to replace it .While at Auto Zone a 2004 Liberty came in and had to do the same it was the same post and had the same acid corrosion on it too. but just had a small crack on the top.
I have a 02 and that is OK for a battery, but Not for the 04 anybody seen or heard of this .

We had a build of corrosionon on the same side and it turned out to be radiator fluid coming back and hitting it.

I just had the NEG battery terminal cleaned because of the corrosion that formed around the metal. I'm still on my OEM battery so far.

I had to replace the battery on the '02 because of corrosion. The negative terminal clamp is very definitely damaged.

I had cleaned the terminals several times before someone suggested it is probably acid leaking from the battery.

Does anyone know if there is any kind of gel or whatever that we can coat the neg battery terminal with to prevent the buildup and recurrence of corrosion?

walmart brand petroleum jelly..OR..coat with wd-40 each time you check oil..OR...use dielectric grease

You can get a tube of it or little packets at the register of most auto stores....it's the stuff we used to put inside the boots of plug wires before putting them on the plugs to seal them up and repel water. Good stuff...a toothpaste sized tube can last FOREVER.

Petroleum jelly with some baking soda added to neutralize any acids works well. Dielectric grease is an electrically conductive grease, but it has no neutralizing effects and spendy.

My new-looking battery would disagree. Is there a scientific basis you're basing that statement on? Actually just wondering...

I had a little of corrosion a while back; took a wire brush to it and dipped the negative clamp in some baking soda and some vinegar and added some Vaseline to the terminal. That did the trick. Until late last week it started to make that early morning noise of not enough juice in the battery, took out the mutli-meter and sure enough it was time for a new one. Got one at Sears for $80.00 put some more Vaseline on it and BAM ready to go.

My girlfriend's Dakota wouldn't start on Sunday so I went over to have a look. The battery had corrosion over both posts. One of the leads was corroded through. Ugly mess. I cleaned them both, put on a new lead and presto. We'll try the vaseline and baking soda to keep the corrosion from starting up again.

I just had to replace the battery in My '02 last Thursday. I was leaving work and the battery was dead. Lights were dim, and the starter wouldn't weven click. I had some corrosion on the post but not much. It was the original battery

I have a 2002 and i'm still on the original battery. No corrosion whatsoever. I think I should still think about a replacement.

My battery died on the '05 on Sunday. Took a look and saw the corosion on the negative side cable. After removing the cable found a crack in the top of a 15 mo. old battery? Since it is still under warranty, I had to wait till the next day (Monday) and leave it at the dealer for 6 hours till I could get it back. Sooooo pissed, but it did save me $60-$100. I am hoping the next time it dies it won't be under warranty so I can fix it immediately and replace with an optima. :evil:

Battery in my 03 died today when my wife was using it. No corrosion, just plain dead. No interior lights, no starter clicking. Just dead.

A jump start from my car got the KJ home and a quick trip to the local Pep Boys got me running again.

I just replaced my original battery last week, noticed the negative post starting to corrode over the last few months. As I was changing the oil, I took a closer look and realized there was no way I could get the terminal off.
I figured it was time for a new battery anyway- so i took it to the local battery shop- they had to cut off the negative terminal, put a new terminal (which required a new ground wire bcause the one that was cut off was too short for the new terminal to reach). The battery dude said the corrosion was from the batter acid "sweating" through the soft, porous lead.
