Hey everyone,

So I've been shopping around for a relatively cheap set of wheels for wheelin' to use with my 245/75/16 Grabber AT2's. I've decided to use these for wheelin and keep my stock wheels with my other set of tires for street/daily commute.

I was looking at some of the Rock Crawler wheels at 4Wheel Parts and was considering the black Series 51 wheels. I was just looking for some input on these wheels if they are a good choice or not.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I should get a 16x7 wheel, but the rest I'm somewhat clueless on. I know I need a 5-lug wheel, but is there specific lug spacing I should look for? How about backspacing? I currently have a Rusty's coil lift on the Rene.

Thanks!!!

The stock 16" wheels have 5.5" of backspacing and a 5 on 4.5" lug pattern. You can find more Liberty wheel info here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Jeep_Liber ... s_%26_Rims

Sweet, thanks! So is everyone usually going with 4.5" backspacing? Thanks for the help!

I'm running that EXACT combination you mentioned but in 8", they are fantastic - dont stick out too far, just the right look, tracks well with the evenly spread 245 cause its on the 8" rim amd looks pron. !

4.5" of backspacing is prefect for the 245's, but i'm about to upgrade to 265's so not sure how it will be then. :?

Here's a pic of the exact same tyres on the actual 8" rim (left) VS a 7" stock rim (right)

And the wheel itself

Hey, thanks OzLtd!!!

Your wheel/tire combo definitely looks really sweet!!

So, would 16x7 w/ 4" BS be the way to go, or 16x8 w/ 4.5" BS? I'm looking to have the least possible rub.

Thanks again for all the help!

Alright, please forgive my newbish-ness. Sounds like 16x8 with 5" BS may be the way to go with the 245/75. Just read that the Rubicon Moab rims are that sizing, and it seems like people are running them with no problems.

Hopefully I'm right. I'm looking at the Cragar Soft 8's right now on Jeg's website since they're cheap and Jeg's has free shipping.

I just installed the 16x8 Series 51's with a 4.25" backspace and love the look/fitment. Perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Here is a link to a recent pic of them installed...

16x8 w/ 5" bs will just barely stick out past the top of the fender flares. Perfect fit IMO.

The wheels you mentioned are very popular and are a fine choice for your application.

If you're truly just going to keep an extra set for offroading, then you might want to consider saving a few bucks by scouring the local salvage yard for a set of wheels.

I kind of did the same thing but in reverse. I inherited 18" bling wheels with A/T tires which I installed for street use (I commute 114 miles a day) and kept my factory steelies for offroading. In hindsight, I could've compromised with a little road noise. The fuel savings between the two sets is really negligible.

Good call on the salvage yard fdezone. Seems like someone said that wheels from an older crown vic fit. Should mean that F150 and a lot of other ford wheels will fit also. Double check to be sure but I think that Dodge trucks have the same bolt pattern, someone even posted a pic with wheels from their intrepid mounted up so probably durango's dodge trucks other jeeps, dodge vans etc etc.. There should be plenty of wheels floating around the salvage yards that could work.

Just a Note:

Be careful reducing your BS too much. The stock 5.5" with a 16x7 rim is stock. If you go to even a 16x7 rim with 4.5" BS, the arc your wheel/tire combo move will increase significantly ( the front tires when turning ). This can cause major rubbing issues inside your front wheelwell.

You can take a pencil and see for yourself. Draw a vertical line on a piece of paper that is the length of your pencil. Then from the bottom of the line draw a line that extends the same length at a 45degree angle.
16x7 with 5.5"b= 1.5" travel offset
16.7 with 5.0bs= 2.0" travel offset
16x7 with 4.5"bs= 2.5" offset travel
16x8 with 5.0"bs= 3.0" offset travel

mark your pencil at 1.5", 2", 2.5" and 3" and put the "0" end of your pencil at the bottom of your vertical line. Now keep the bottom of your pencil in place and "sweep" the pencil to the 45 degree and mark the spots along the line that correspond to the 1.5". 2", ect.

Next draw a line horizontal from the bottom of the line to complete two side of an imaginary box...and then do the same procedure from the bottom of the starting point.

This will illustrate the changes that occur in travel when a wheel/tire combo is turned a fixed degree...you will notice that your finishing points will be much farther out and back...which equates to rubbing...lol

The point is that it is a little counterintuitive...you think by moving the wheel/tire out...you will create more clearance within the wheelwell by lets say the pinch weld...but in actuallity you will be getting closer to the pinch weld.

I had some 16x7 with 4.75bs custom made for my 2002 KJ and they pushed the limits with 265/75/16's.
In the rear the smaller offsets move your wheel/tire out and clearance becomes an issue at the fender flairs ( exspecially when compressed.
Just be careful not to overdue it.

***Can you tell I'm bored today?***

 is right! Nice write-up Wally!

I'll keep everyone posted about the wheel setup. When I get 'em I'll post pics, for sure.

Ford ranger and explorer lug pattern is the same but a different offset. The full size cars and trucks are 5 on 5 1/2, won't work.

Has anyone tried a 16x9 rim with a 4.5" backspacing? Going to wrap 245/75/16s on them.
