I have an 06 liberty and would like to have the lower ball joints replaced with the moog greaseable ball joints. I would pay for the labor because they are after market items. I called two local jeep dealers and both service managers said the same thing: The recall has to be done first. They explained to me the original joints will be pressed out, the factory replacements would be pressed in and the knuckles would be put back on. The liberty would than be considered safe to comply with the recall. Then the jeep would be tacken apart again and the moogs put in. I will be paying the labor for all of this. Has anyone gone through this? I have had a service manager and two different mechanics tell me the new ball joints are the same exact item as the original. The difference is on the original the top cap over the ball was pressed on without a silicone seal and the replacements have the seal. They also stated that the replacement will eventually fail because they can't be greased and the moog's are better because of this. Any added info would be helpfull.

Have someone else just install the Moogs and then send Jeep the bill. They should reimburse for the work. (But verify that first)

I'm not sure Jeep would pay for that - I realize they have paid for some - however there's a difference between a 3-4 year old jeep where the ball Joints were replaced as a safety issue before the recall was issued - which Jeep has paid for vs less than a year old where the ball joints are replaced as a precaution after the recall was issued.
I think that's a much more difficult arguement to make.

Actually on an 06 - is your jeep even listed in the recall, not all were (I think manufactured before Mar?)

personally, I was ready to order Moog's when the recall was issued - I decided to save the money for a while - have Jeep replace the ball joints - and then check them (mine had .56mm movement vs a 1.5 mm wearout spec) when the new ones come close to wearout - then replace with Moog's - however I rotate tires every 3000 miles and it's easy to check - you just have to make it a regular habit so you're not surprised.

I love my KJ but Jeep sucks.I've never had the recall done and won't let a dealer near my Jeep.After the bear of a time I had installing the Frankenlift I can see those morons getting it apart and refusing to reinstall my lift.I'm on my second set of LBJs and at 108K they seem to be OK.They're Moog but before the serviceable ones were available.68K on these and I'mm gonna replace them soon 'cause I'm getting paranoid again.

You said you would have to pay for eveything? Do you mean pressing the old ones out and just getting the recall done? Or paying to have the new joints pressed out and getting the moogs pressed in?

I never fooled with the recall. I just put the moogs in my-self. heck with DC and there crappy balljoints. I bet 5yrs down the road, they will be having another recall b/c the joints they are using in the recall suck..

I would like to get my moogs payed for though. Ill probably wait till I get a letter in the mail from DC for the recall though. Then Ill call DC and ask for some money..

I don't have to pay labor if I just do the recall. I have to pay labor if I have them put the moog's in. That labor charge will include the time they spend pressing in the dc replacement ball joints, reassembling the jeep and declaring it a safe vehicle than taking it all apart again. I will be paying for the time it takes to press in there ball joints and reassemble it for nothing. The service managers told me the labor charge would be around $140.

No, labor for warranty work should NOT include putting it back together. You should only pay for them pressing the DC replacement joints out and pressing the moogs in.

Why would you pay for them to press the recall joints in?

There is no warranty work done. Aftermarket parts and the labor to put them in are not covered. They all told me that by using aftermarket ball joints the warranty is voided and I have to pay for the whole procedure.

Go have the recall done for free then go back in a week and have the Moog serviceables installed your cost. They're not going to install your aftermarket parts for free...

They CAN NOT void your warrenty because of the Moog joints. The Moogs (meet or exead all oem & fedrel standerds). That would be like saying your engine warrenty is void because you used Fram or Purelator air & oil filters insted of Mopar ones. I would just go to a differant dealer & call DC to report that dealership.

Screw the recall, have the Moogs installed somewhere else, then send DC the bill. If they reimburse you, great. If not, big deal, you paid to have a safer set of LBJs installed. Consider it a mod that may save your life.

Several who have purchased ball joints from me, put a claim in with DC. DC has called me several times confirming that I did in deed sell the lower MOOG joints to customers, and that they would reimburse them. This maybe only for you who have purchased new ball joints before the recall went into effect.

The only bad part now, is that I am on DC's radar!

I just received a check from DC for parts and labor for the F23 recall. I had the ball joints replaced during routine service in June, Mechanic said they were very loose, in Sept I received recall notice and sent in copy of invoice and work order and got full reinbersement from DC.
2002 liberty now with 118,000 miles
