The word going around is Jeep built a Wrangler with a Cummins diesel for the SEMA show, and they are planning to mass produce it for the U.S. in a couple of years. I saw it in Autoweek or somewhere. Anybody else see that?

This is a combo rumor of three distinct parts
1) There IS a CRD wrangler...just not in the USA. 2) The SEMA thing is that 2004 Liberator (moab CRD libby), they got it wrong and called it a wrangler, read the innitial report and then the replys. Canvas top description pegs it as a Libby (see the 2008 Libby spypicks discussion on those other, non-diesel parts of this forum):

http://www.jeepnewsnow.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1299

3) The Cummins part of your rumor is from a discussion of Cummins purchases by Chrysler, with speculation that they might go into future Jeep vehicles.

At least, that is my research on the rumors. I really really wish there WAS a dirty, simple, fuel-efficient Cummins on a wrangler. I dream of that...a nice uncomplicated engine that last forever. I'm worried that the new 3.0 mercedes deisels wil be finicky, high-tech but short lived babies.

I need a life....

I'm with you on the Blue Tec 3.0 Mercedes Diesels. Rumor on the street is that you can't rebuild the new Blue Tec's. At least our CRD's you can send to a Diesel rebuilder.

Also, Mercedes initial consumer quality has gone down a bit due to all the electronic gadgetry that is prone to gremlins. It stands to be seen how this will fare in the new GC with the Blue Tec

Yeah I've pretty much confirmed that DCX and Cummins have an agreement for new diesels. One is a 4.2L V6 turbo-diesel I think, and the other is a 5.6L V8 turbo-diesel. DCX is planning to put these engines into their lighter duty trucks like the Dakota and Ram 1500 and probably the Durango.

What I don't know for sure though is if the Cummins engines will ever see use in Jeep vehicles. A Wrangler with the V6 Cummins diesel would be a nearly perfect machine in my opinion, and they would sell the 4-door model with diesel power so fast that they wouldn't be able to keep up with production...that's what I honestly believe.

I have to admit, I was wrong. But so were the rumors. It looks like it was a completely different animal, a 3.0L in an Unlimited:

http://www.jeepnewsnow.com/modules/news ... oryid=1304

Not a Cummins, and not a 2.8L. Strange that they would take the new blue tec 3.0L CRD out of a GC (or import a VM 3.0L from Europe) and shove it into an Unlimited when they are already MAKING 2.8L Unlimiteds stock on the line for export. I wonder which is actually a better engine?

There WAS the liberator (customized Libby) also there:

http://www.jeepnewsnow.com/modules/news ... oryid=1299

Mea Culpa.

I think I would rather have a 2.8L or a big o'l Cummin's. Don't trust the blue-tec yet..it needs to earn its stripes before I take it way the heck into the woods.

Ahhh, if they put a V6 Cummins TD in the 4-door Wrangler one would be in my driveway before the delivery truck was done unloading. We already talked about it and started saving for it. Looking for next year sometime (ARE YOU LISTENING DC?!?!) If they don't make it, I might try to pick up a used KJ CRD.

What would it take to drop a 2.8L VM CRD into an Unlimited? Could we assume the engine mounting would be ok if they are doing it on the line? Tranny would have to be different. Hmmm, lots of work.

Easier to import one and sneak it through emissions.

I thought about the same thing BiodieselJeep.com; Throw a 2.8 into an 06 Rubicon. Nice. But I think, at this point, I'd rather either fly to Africa and get a diesel 4-door JK (and try to get it back to the states, or put a 2.8 into an old CJ.

So I've been shopping CJ7s. 8)

Did you check out the new Unlimited? It is VERY nice! However, I sure would like the mettal parts on an old CJ....nothing to break. For instance, I can't imagine that the interior plastic-loop door handles on my 05 Libby CRD are either going to last very long nor be easy to cheaply fix/replace.

They made the new handles on the 07's goofy and big....probably longer lasting than my KJ but nothing like mettal.

I have not been in one of the new 4-door Unlimiteds yet. I want to go looking this weekend. I imagine they'll feel a little "plastic" compared to a CJ, but not so much compared to the KJ. My Limted has the "metal-esque" door handles and such. Seems a little less likely to break than the Sport accessories, but it's still not metal. Might be the same material they're using on the new JK (shrug). I don't know.

I wonder if a Cummins 610 would fit in a CJ7? Hee hee. I could live with THAT. How much is a crate C610? I'm pretty sure the Duramax and Powerstroke are larger in dimensions than the Cummins...aren't they? Anyway know?

The new 2007 Wrangers (JK) feature the newly-redesigned 2.8L VM Motori CRD engine. In the JK it's currently rated at 360 N-m, however the CRD JK hasn't gone into production yet. Chrysler is rapidly working on an upgraded 545RFE for the '07 JK that will bump the output to 460 N-m. Can be purchased with or without DPF depending on the market. MTX versions get the same NVG370 six speed found in the CRD Nitro.

Hey hey, glad that I can be of help. I can't reveal all the secrets of course, but I figure that since I work on these all the time that I can be of some help since the dealers definitely are lacking. Plus since I am usually in some form of contact with DCX program managers, I can always pass along suggestions as well.

If anyone is ever passing through Terre haute IN (exit 11 on I-70, west-central indiana), feel free to stop by here at Rose-Hulman. We're using the 2.5L engines for a hybrid vehicle project and have 3 or 4 of them here, some down to the short block, a couple that i'm currently freshening up, and one on the dyno that I'm doing calibration work on. Stop by and I'll show you what they're like and all that cool jazz.

They better be working on an upgraded 545RFE for the '07since I'm getting tired of burning through them on my '05.

Mr Mopar64, becareful about your offer! I've half a mind tomake a road trip out there from CT just to take a peak at a diesel-hybrid! Heck, half the guys on this list might drop in on you!

Any chance for some picks (diesel-porn)?

Do you think the upgraded 545RFE is just upgraded internal parts and TC? If so, I wonder if we could order those upgraded parts once it's released, for our current CRD's?
