Has anyone done this on their own? I've read through the directions given in the TSB and it doesn't seem too hard. My Jeep dealer won't do the TSB since it doesn't have any bad symptoms, so I figure I'll do it myself. Parts only come to about $60 or so...

Is there any trick to refilling the tranny fluid? I've never messed with changing auto tranny fluid on my own...

I'm thinking of adding the performance shift kit for the tranny at the same time to help lengthen the tranny's life.

Your Jeep is new and it's not showing any symptoms, I wouldn't mess with it for a while. You will know when/or if it starts having problems. The filter related problems won't leave you stranded, just have to let it idle for a minute to re-fill the torque converter when/if it back-drains. If it back-drains and you don't aggrevate the condition, you should have time to get the dealer service it under warranty without causing damage.

Just fill it tough the tranny dipstick tube at back of the engine, no trick involved, just pour the fluid slowely. The FSM is incorrect in amount of fluid refill, (say 4 qts) the tranny when both filters are drained and tranny drains durring this period it will require about 9 quarts of tranny fluid to refil. To properly check the fluid you need the tranny hot and in park on level. Most dealers will under fill the tranny fluid and some of the '05's even shipped from factory low on fluid. This lack of proper fill caused 90% of the tranny problems that most here experienced because the trannys were never properly filled to start with and cause torque converter failures. This was speeded along by some poor programing for TC lock up and when those two problems got togather you had real problems.

9BLASTED QUARTS??? HOLY CATS! That's a lot of fluid. Alright, well I guess I'll wait. Despite my truck being an '06 it is 2 days inside of the last date of the tranny TSB. I was planning on doing the filters as a preventative measure. Espcially if I install the shift kit, I'm already in there, so I might as well put the filters in...

That is true it will not cause damage as long as the tranny is not taken out of park before it has time to pump up fluid, but why chance the times you or spouse forget to let it idle long enough before putting it in the gear. Also they way some of the dealers have treated CRD owners it might take an act of Congress to get them to do the work under warranty, so it might be easier and safer for the CRD it you do the job.

I did mine myself. It wasn't bad. If you've never changed transmission fluid before, I warn you it can be messy. You're going to need a large drain pan. It would be good to have floor dry and plenty of paper towels on hand. The pan is glued to the trans with black RTV. I'd take out all the bolts except one at each corner. Then I'd take the two on the side where I want the bulk of the draining to occur and loosen them until they are a couple turns from being out. You will have to pry the pan loose from the trans, and without the bolts to control the situation, it can get out of hand because the pan will usually pop loose suddenly. If you can come up with a pump and hose setup to run down the dipstick tube, you could avoid the drama of removing a pan that is still full.

Good deal. I am a member of an auto club so I have access to lifts and big huge drain pans and stuff. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than working in the parking lot with a floor jack...

It was very messy when I watched the dealer tech do mine. They let it drip for a good 30 min.+ after the pan and filters were down. Don't forget to clean the magnet in the corner of the pan. There is also a notice out about making sure the pick-up tube of the main filter is properly seated.

Might want to go to Lublocker and elimanate the RTV forever. I did on my differential and will on tranny at next service.

Don't know as I haven't checked as yet, won't need to even do the fluid and filter for another year or two.
