Well, the power steering pump on my 03 Freedom edition is finally about to go. I've had several people tell me thats why my engine sounds the way it does, friends and people i just met. So...

Anybody ever had to replace theres, i doubt i'd be doing it myself, but what kind of price range am i going to be looking at so i can take away from xmas money accordingly.

Is it squealing? Have you tried cleaning the belt first? Take a terry cloth and some mineral spirits and wipe the road oil off the inside track.

Also, did you ever put any other kind of fluid into the pump? A non Chrysler power steering fluid/ATF+ 4?

The pump is about 80-90 dollars and I would assume about 1 hr labor plus some new fluid you are looking at 160-200 dollar if you take it to your local mechanic. I'd stay away from the dealer they will probably want 400-500 to repair.

Its not a squeal. Its almost like a whining noise.

As for the fluid, i'd assume it was chrysler/atf+4 as it was looked at while my lower ball joints were recalled and they said htey toped off the fluid.

On a lighter note, i called my buddy who works at a mechanics shop to see how much he'd be able to get me one for, he said installed for 200, he told me to bring it by and he'd take a close look at it.

45 minutes later, power steering pump is perfectly fine, rack and pinion is perfectly fine, fluid is fine, turns out it was my idler pully.

Replaced and installed for $60.

$60 beats the hell out of $300+
