Alldata doesn't have TSB's this earlier that I could find. It was dated April 12, 2006. At that point in time, they limited the repair to vehicles built prior to a specific date and with specific symptoms.

Some of the text from TSB 21-009-006:

2005 - 2006 (KJ) Liberty / Cherokee
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.8L turbo-diesel engine and
a 545RFE automatic transmission (sales codes ENR and DGQ respectively)
and built prior to November 03, 2005.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience all of the following conditions:
- A Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination due to Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC) P0740 - Torque Converter Out Of Range.
- A rattle-like sound from the torque converter / bellhousing area of the
transmission. This sound may be heard when the transmission is in neutral or park
and the engine speed is raised above an idle.
- Intermittent torque converter lock and unlock when in lock-up mode. The
customer may feel that the transmission is shifting more frequently than expected. A
scan tool may be required to verify desired mode (lock-up) and actual mode (unlock)
of the torque converter.
DIAGNOSIS:
If diagnosis determines that the MIL is due to DTC P0740, and both the rattle-like sound
and intermittent torque converter lock-up symptoms are present, then perform the Repair
Procedure.

yes, for some reason my non-related error code was the fuel/water separator warning indicator. It is supposed to stay on when it senses water in the filter. But, mine would intermittently go on and off. Maybe on for 10 seconds then off.
Very strange characteristics but it was the harbinger to warn that the tranny was going to go.

The old tranny gave me the 35MPH lug/thump. The new one does not
The old tranny gave me the 55~60 stutter/shudder we all know. The new one does not
The old tranny gave me the TORQUE monster feel. The new one does not

Although mechanically the new 545RFE is working flawlessly, I DO NOT like that the latest flash that was put in at the time the whole transmission was replaced. It has changed the engine characteristics and the new programmed TCM parameters have de-tuned the engine slightly.

IMHO what does this mean?
I experience larger RPM's to get the CRD moving from a standstill. If the engine turns more RPM's at the spindle to the transmission then the TC pump pushes more fluid through the clutch assembly. This would theoretically mean that the more fluid pumped through the clutch assembly would lead to less overheating and failure.

Prior to the flash, 2K RPM would scoot me through the 4-way stop intersection. Now she's got to turn over 3k to do the same. Also when going into overdrive, the transition at 50mph was crisp on the old tranny. The new one revs longer and higher before pushing me into overdrive.
Howver, I noticed that only the reverse gear still has that crisp torque monster feel with giving the accelerator the "toe in".

I talked to my Diesel tech, and he suggested the EDGE module for the smooth power band. So, all I want for Christmas is my TORQUE monster back! Even if I have to buy a module and go through another transmission!

actually no, the notice says they will inspect for tranny damage and if needed it will take an extra hour, that is about how long a new tranny pump will take to put in. I suspect they don't know from VIN# which CRD has which tranny pump, so if the see the old it will get the new. After all what tranny "damage" would really only take an hour to fix? Even solenoid packs take twice that, filters take an hour plus alone...

Maybe. Maybe not. We haven't seen any parts list from one of these repairs yet. It may well include a new tranny pump. Would be foolish and costly to put a new TC on with a damaged or inadequate tranny pump. DCX would be right back here again next year doing it all over again without fixing all of it.

My 06 CRD falls into the repair recall. How much torque loss are we talking here? How much is a little. Does anyone know. I will bet it's more than a little if it is noticeable. What a bummer I like the way the engine runs now, I just don't like the tranny. The tranny does need repair. We can't keep putting up with this problem. :cry:

I am going to play lets make a deal... I am ordering a custom TQ from APS. Then I will make them refund me and put the son of bango player in. They can tweak the ECM as much as they want. I am sure Inmotion will fix that for me later on... What I wanna know is are they going to fix the tranny pump? That concerns me. I am going to see if I can get them to install a Transgo shift kit while I am at it.

I think a lawsuit is more and more in order every day now.

I checked my CRD on the Jeep site; mine is not listed. For those of you who have your CRD listed, have you previously notified the dealer of problems? I am suffering from the shudder, but I have not taken it into the dealership at this point. I told my wife what was the use; they don't have a fix yet so I'll drive it until it breaks or a fix comes out. It is getting worse so this is good timing. I'm just curious as to whether those who are fortunate to be listed have previously reported problems and therefore those vehicles are listed as eligible, and those of us who haven't yet have to report a problem to get listed to be eligible.

My CRD also not on the list. Just got it back from having the ball joints and a fuel injector replaced. I wonder if it's just the 05's or if there all going to get done.

I recently had mine in because the RMP's seemed higher, and the transmission didn't seem to be shifting at the right points. Three service guys drove it around all day, and no one seemed to think anything was wrong. My work order stated something like "No transmission problems found at this time." Who knows if this recent visit had anything to do with me being on the F37 list, but I am!

I just got my crd back from the shop last week. They replaced the TC, Pump (new style), Filters & cooler... The kicker is: Jeep has the *recall* listed as incomplete for my vin. I guess this means that if the tranny acts up again after my warranty expires, I can get it fixed again for free... right?

Well, 2005s seem to get it, and some 2006s (the info does say CRDs built before Nov 2005). Just to be sure I checked my VIN and the Jeep site doesn't say anything about F37 for my CRD.

Oddly, the site does say my CRD needs to have F31, but I had brought it to the dealer months ago with the F31 letter and they did it then.

Here's a question: Why vehicles before Nov 2005? Did they change something on the manufacture line then? Would this mean they've been aware of the TC and tranny problems, they had a fix, but haven't been willing to admit it until now?

Couple of possibilities come to mind wrt to why now instead of when the TSB first surfaced in April 06 and why they came clean on the lower power issue:

DC was not sure what the magnitude of the TC failures would work out to be - there is probably a formula or crossover point model where it costs less to replace all known weak TC/pumps than to wait any longer

DC is monitoring these sites as well as the NHTSA site for complaints about dangerous TC failures and fears a forced safety recall and investigation by government agency's, i.e. ball joint style

DC is monitoring these sites and has lowered the torque ratings enough that they could be violating Federal laws regarding advertising 295 ft-lbs on a vehicle, then reducing it without notice or consent of the customers - they may still be in trouble with this one - all it will take is for one CRD owner to put their vehicle on a dyno test and post the results - if it comes back well below published figures, including an allowance for any reasonable margin of error, DC may have a lawsuit on their hands.

DC may already have a lawsuit on their hands with a CRD owner that we don't know about.

DC is trying to do the right thing and fix the mess their CRD customers have been experiencing.

I went to the Jeep site and mine came up as incomplete too. How do I find out what that means. I think though they only replaced the TC and solenoid and not the pump and cooler.

I think it all depends on how much they are reducing it by. If they used a quality part, they shouldn't have to reduce the amount of torque. This would indicate to me that they aren't replacing them with redesigned torque converters.

My 2006 with a build date of 01/2006 is not listed, but the LBJ recall is listed which I need to call my dealer to get taken care of.

I would think it would be illegal for them to reduce the power of our vehicles, just to save themselves some money when they should have used quality parts in the first place.

Well lowereing the torque/horsepower to fix a problem is just plain ridiculous. It we had a driveline shake at 75mph, would it be right to put a limiter on the KJ that kept it below 70 mph?

Makes we wonder if CRDs built after Nov 2005 already have the lower power ratings??? Probably cheaper to lower the torque output than fix with hard parts.
