Anyone else Notice all the UNSOLD CRDs......

I've done several Searches on www.jeep.com and noticed A BUNCH that are available For Sale!

BTW, the CRD I wanted REAL BAD (2 months ago) is still sitting on the Stealership's lot UNSOLD!! They even deducted an additional $1000 off and it's STILL sitting there!

Good move not including the CRD Jeep/Chrysler! :roll:

It's totally the opposite here. I tried to find a CRD, and I only found 4 left in a 200 mile radius. Dealers are selling them literally as they take them off the trucks. I finally found one equipped the way I wanted and bought it before it was gone too.

I think the employee pricing on the gas ones made them sell faster over the last few weeks, but I'm getting 28 miles to the gallon on this tank which is nearly 100% better fuel economy than my wife's 3.7L so it's hard to turn that down.

I read somewhere that untill the production numbers are bigger they aren't making money on the CRD. The engines cost them too much in the low volume they are getting them. Don't know if it is true just repeating what I read.

I agree w/ LibertyCRD. I think it's all about the incentives on the gas Libby's. Most people when confronted with paying a $4,000 premium for the CRD will opt for the 3.7. It will take awhile to make that back in fuel savings so unless you need the diesel for towing or have some other specific desire for diesel, Joe six-pack isn't going to pony up for the CRD.

My guess is that now since the Employee Pricing promotion is over CRDs will start moving again.

CRDs are not selling here (NJ). Our CRD sat on the dealer's lot for months. We got a killer deal to take it off their hands. :lol:

I have to question the towing incentive. The CRD and 3.7L are pretty darn close to the same weight and tow rating of 5k. So, if your pulling a 3800lb TT, is performance going to be the same? Doubt anyone would want to pull a 3700lb TT that's 27ft long much less a 3000lb trailer thats 25ft long. The KJ just doesn't look it would be safe towing any thing longer then 18ft. I was going to dump my 3.7 for a CRD and sell my motorhome to get a travel trailer but after seeing one towing a 18ft TT, I gave up the death wish. Think I'm going pickup w/diesel. Anyone got any real time experience towing a TT with a CRD? What's it like?

Tow a 16 ft 3/16" aluminum hulled jet sled tiller model, and a 19 ft winshield model all the time with no problems. Longest trip with the 19 ft 180 miles round trip.

To answer your first question, you typically get better milage with a diesel when you're towing versus a gas vehicle. I know if you take two similarly equiped pickups, one with gas and one with diesel, your towing milage hit is usually quite a bit less on the diesel.

On your second point, I have to agree. The first time I saw the CRD's towing capacity I could just see someone towing a huge travel trailer, which would be a accident waiting to happen. The typical rule of thumb is that the length from hitch to trailer axle should not exceed the wheelbase of the tow vehicle. If you're outside that recommendation, you're asking for trouble. Load leveling hitches, anti-sway setups watching your tongue weight and trailer brakes can all help, but towing a load that's too big for your tow rig can have some disasterous consequences.

Also, something people forget about is the EASE of driving with a load. All the vehicles I've ever owned, including full size trucks, all had gas engines. Some 6-cylinders, some V8s. And ALL of them would have to downshift when pulling up hills with a load. In fact, downshift, upshift, downshift, upshift got to be REALLY annoying in my Dodge Ram with the V8.

The great thing about diesel engines is, they make MORE torque than gas engines AND they make it below 2,000 RPM!! That is something that's unheard of with a gas engine. So what I've found is, I can tow 4,000 lbs. up and down these Kentucky hillsides all day long with my Jeep CRD, and it won't even drop overdrive!

Not only does that prolong the life of the transmission, but it saves a ton of fuel and makes the Jeep easier to drive with a load too.

So even though both the 3.7L and CRD have the same towing rating...there is NO way a 3.7L will hang in there with a CRD. And I know that for a fact because my wife and I own both.

Also, my CRD is saving $100/month on fuel over her gasser. That's $1,200/year. At that rate, my diesel option will pay for itself in less than two years according to the cost listed on my window sticker. It's really a no-brainer to me.

I would love to get a 18-21 ft ultra light travel trailer and tow it with my CRD but with your rule that might no work. Anybody tow a light (3500-4000ulvw) RV with their CRD, will it not work? I've never towed an RV before, I just think the toy haulers are kinda cool.

I agree w/ LibertyCRD. Towing is my main motivation for a CRD. I tow a 3,500lb 6x10ft motorcycle trailer. It's taller, wider, and longer than my Wrangler and I get ~9mpg on the flats, ever worse in hills - guys in the mileage thread are reporting 20mpg towing 4,000lbs w/ a CRD. Also, regardless of the $$ savings, I sometimes have to downshift to 3rd to get up hills. So I'm looking forward to a more enjoyable towing experience.

I *don't* need a 1-ton diesel pickup but I want diesel. The CRD fits perfectly into what I need, even if I'm not a big fan of the styling. Sorry, as a TJ guy I have to kid

When did they add employee pricing and rebates to the CRD? I just checked Jeep's site and using my parent's zip code (in Oklahoma) it doesn't show anything for the CRD (neither employee pricing or rebates).

There sure isn't very many in the Pacific Northwest. 4 total in Seattle/Tacoma andf Portland,OR. Most dealers have sold 4 or 5 each at premium prices. The ones out there appear to be stripped models or had the accessory book thrown at them. The middle ground, tow package, limited slip rigs are long gone according to the stealerships.

No kidding about the pacific NW. Impossible to find the one we wanted, and had to settle with all the features we want but our second color.

We didn't get charged a premium, but they sure are not "dealing" with them here (Portland, OR).

They are very hard to find here.

Maybe DC mis read where they would be popular? Maybe they thought they would be popular in places with traditional diesel sales - but those people want bigger trucks and not a compact SUV? And in places like here they thought diesel sales would not be high - but tons of people want a compact SUV in diesel?

Maybe they should have checked with VW, because VW diesels are like solid gold here in the NW...

There are people who go to places like Oklahoma and whatnot and buy old VW diesels and bring them back here to sell for a nice profit. We had friends sell a VW TDI Passat with 100,000 miles on the clock for over *retail* book value!

A couple of thoughts...

I don't know about appearances or certain local lots having to offer incentives to get CRDs to move but overall CRD sales were better than expected by DC. As of June '05 Autoblog reported an average amount of time on a lot for Liberty CRDs as being 23 days (3x less than any other Jeep product).

As to cost for low purchase numbers: VM Motori makes the CRD and is partly owned by Detroit Diesel and Detroit Diesel is a wholly owned subsidiary of DC. It seems then that DC can get about what they need from VM Motori.
